Questions about scalix

Postby kool_kid » Fri Dec 07, 2007 4:59 pm

Heya

Reading the scalix admin n setup guides i installed the scalix server, that was an awesome experience and the guides were great whoever documented it.... Good man!!.

But know i have few questions about scalix ranging from basic to advance lol. So here i go

Q1> currently im using local IP i.e (192.168.1.52) but if i use a static IP which i get from my ISP, do i need to specify the ISP IP in the same way i do now becuase i will be using a Domain name and in Live environment if i choose yahoo.com as my system domain name then it would clash with the real yahoo.com domain so, how do i specify the ISP IP a quick guide would be appreciated.

Q2> Using my mail accounts i can send mails to other domains like gmail yahoo etc but i cant receive any mail from these domains, how do i configure that?

Q3> I need to store a Global Addresses (like the email address of our IT Team , Admin team ) which should be displayed or stored in every account i create, how do i accomplish this??

If your referring to any Documentation please specify the page number where i can find the solution or the chapter name. That would be great help for me :)

Hi

Q1> you can configure to nat from your Internet address port 25 to 192.168.1.52 port 25

Q2> as in Q1

Q3> This is called a Group. You can look at the SAC http://192.168.1.52/sac. In there you will see groups. Just create a group and add the users to whish to get the group email.

mikevl for Q2 did u mean to say that i need to port forward from my internet address port to my local ip?

if that the case then i understood it :), but in Q1 if i get a static Innternet IP from ISP and install Scalix on new machine then how do i need set my domain is it the same wa i do it now?. If yes then again if i assign my domain name as yahoo.com would it not clash with the real yahoo.com ? or is it that in another specific way i need to specify my domain name.

Hi

Yes you can certianly run nested groups where e.g na ALLUsers" group can consis of the Sales" group the "Engineering" group the "HR" group, the "Management" group etc

Q2 yes you need to port forward from your Internet IP to your local IP on port 25.

Qmore The domain name of your machine is, or can be independent of your Internet doamain name, or can be the same.

If your Internet domain name is abc.com then you may wich to set you hosts file and fqdn in scalix to mail.acb.com or we use mail.abc.local more often. As you install Scalix you can set the Internet address that is attached to the mailnode to be what ever you wish. The internet address is not tied to the local address.

You can block it at the firewall,

Or you can prevent the POP service from starting at all. For that you can use:

omsetsvc -a pop N

Yes Outlook does not use POP if you use the connector or IMAP.

I'm a bit of a nerd, so I usually use the command line, so I could be wrong here, but I believe SAC allows you to start and stop services. That command will disable it so that it will never start again. That way, after a reboot, or things like that, you don't need to keep turning it off.

So you want them to use outlook only for calendar, contacts, etc?

He said he wants people to stop getting their email so I assume he just wants calendar and contacts and notes, etc.

He said he wants to disable POP so that it would stop people from downloading their email, i.e. not keeping them on the server.
