I am attempting to install Scalix 11.2.0 on Fedora 7, which was recently upgraded from FC5, and that was upgraded from FC3 before then. The server has been completely updated as of yesterday.

The installation fails with, "Fatal error occured: Msg: An error occurred configuring Web applications -- check the log for errors." I am unable to get past this point.

Does anyone know of a way to fix this problem?

Below is a diary of my installation steps:

Apache was installed, as were the other packages required for Scalix, with the exception of Postgres. So, as root, I ran:

/etc/init.d/postgresql initdb
/etc/init.d/postgresql start

And then I installed Scalix via the command line:

The logs point at a permission problem with PostgreSQL.

Can you start postgreSQL from the command line?

(/etc/init.d/postgre start) (Might be postgre or postgresql, I can't really remember on RH).

Yes, when I run:

/etc/init.d/postgresql start

It executes properly and starts postgresql up. I can access postgre via the psql command from the user "postgres" and issues SELECTs, etc., so the DB is working properly.

Ok, that's a good first step.

Can you start the SCALIX postgres portion now?

/etc/init.d/scalix-postgres start

I'm going to guess no. So can you please run:

chown -R postgres:postgres /var/opt/scalix/??/postgres

Then try starting it again.

You are correct. When I try to run /etc/init.d/scalix-postgres start, I get:

Initializing database: mkdir: cannot create directory `/var/opt/scalix/fr/postgres/data/pg_log': File exists

grep: /var/opt/scalix/fr/postgres/data/PG_VERSION: No such file or directory

After chowing, the result is the same. An examination of the file shows everything from /var/opt/scalix/fr/postgres and below is owned by postgres:postgres and readable/writable by that user.

Personally, I'd run the installer again and uninstall everything except the server. Then, I'd delete the postgres directory. Lastly, I'd run the installer yet again, and put it all back.

That would be my first thought. Mostly because that will be easier than toying with PostgreSQL. And 95% of the time, that will fix whatever is messed up in there. I'd bet FC5 was a different version of Postgre or something similar. During the upgrade, something was destroyed. Which is fine, there's nothing in Postgre that matters, so just get rid of it completely, and start over from scratch. Postgre isn't a smooth upgrade, particularly between major releases. I'd bet that you started with 7 and are now at 8, and this is the problem you're seeing. Just delete it and go. Everything in there will be rebuild again fairly quickly.

Lastly, I'd recommend moving to CentOS rather than FC. That way you won't have to worry about upgrading both the OS and the App at the same time...
