Partitioning instructoins ver 10 versus ver 11

My version 10 Scalix server has a partitiion of /var/opt/scalix
My old server is Centos 4.x and my new is Centos 5
That what I did following the install procedures back when.
So I built my new server with the same partitioning. I was going to move over all of the contents from the old server to the new (taking the old server offline first). And then do the update.
But rereading the install instructions, it says to have a /var partition.
I don't **THINK** I want to do that. Granted there are things like /var/log that might be nice to have on this partition? But not my /var/named/chroot/....
So what to do? And can I change things at this point without a reinstall of the OS?
