Scalix local passwords

We have set up a Scalix server to authenticate against an external LDAP server, and this works fine for webmail, POP3 and IMAP. However when I am importing users (I'm not usind omldapsync at the moment, just doing the initial load useing omaddu --bulk) I am not specifying any local Scalix password. I didn't think there was any point since we are authenticating against an external source.
Anyway - when I run webmail as one of the newly-imported users, I get a dialog box saying that the password has expired and I have to choose a new one.
I understand that (depending on how I have configured the auth files) the Scalix passwords can either be ignored or be used as a secondary password - but is there any way to tell Scalix not to use local passwords at all, and not to prompt for them if no password was set up during bulk loads?
I did try removing the "om_auth" option from the ual.remote file, leaving only "om_ldap" - but this didn't stop webmail from prompting for a new password.
