Postby john95051 » Tue Aug 15, 2006 2:32 pm

I have struggled for last two days and also did a fresh reinstall on my suse enterprise 9.3 box. Somehow I still can't received external emails. I am using my ISP's smtp server for sending out emails OK.
Here is what I have and hope people in the community can give me a hint on what's going on. I assume scalix running fine since I did telnet to my server on port 110
----

+OK POP3 Server connection terminated
Connection closed by foreign host.

DNS: I used zoneedit.com free service and pointed to my IP. I can telnet, ftp and see my apache test page. It works fine.
Here is my host file:

Hi Rachel,

the mx record setup was through zoneedit.com by pointing to my external ip on my dsl boxand I have forwarded all the ports to the linux box.

Or should I manually config mx record on the linux box? and how to do it?

Thanks for the help,

John

Hi John,

Yes, but what did zoneedit.com define it as? Since you're haven't posted your real domain name, I can't look it up on my end. So, are you saying that if you do a DNS lookup for your MX record it returns some server at zoneedit.com? If so, can you attempt to telnet to that hostname on socket 25 and see if you can connect?

Thanks,
Rachel

Rachel,
Ok, let me use real domain name( jlcinternational.net)since I am testing things.

The mail config through zoneedit.com is by setting the mail server which is responsible for handling all emails to jlcinternational.net. Multiple mail server can be defined with certain order. in my case I only defined one as linux.jlcinternational.net as primary mail server for domain jlcinternational.net. I do not have specific file or the format cause everything has to be done through the their webform.

I do not understand wy I have to care about port 25? I am using my isp's smtp server for outgoing emails and are works fine. I am in trouble with incoming mail which should related to 110. Or I missing someting here. Here are the response I got.

If I should do the MX redord locally, any referrence you can point me?

Thanks,

Hi John,

So here's the problem. As you said, your MX record is set to:

jlcinternational.net MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = linux.jlcinternational.net

which means that any mail going to jlcinternational.net goes to that host via socket 25. Now, when I attempt to connect to that host, I either get a DNS timeout or when it does resolve I get a Connect Failed. That means there's no way for me to send mail to anyone at jlcinternational.net.

Thanks,
Rachel

Rachel,

Are you saying that the incoming emails are attempting through port 25? instead of 110? How should I fix this?

THanks, John

Hi John,

Yes, socket 25 is the SMTP port and socket 110 is the POP3 port. So yes, incoming mail to jlcinternational.net goes through socket 25.

Thanks,
Rachel

Rachel,

Thanks for confirming this.
Any suggestion on how/where to fix this? I am completely lost on this since I have been keep "trying many things". I know I just have not hit the right point.

What& where is the typical way to specify the MX record on the server?

Regards, John

Problem solved!!

I can't believe I did this. I blocked my port 25.
