Need /etc/*release* file contents for CentOS and SuSE 10.x

All,

I'm planning to ask our Installer team to include a couple of non-supported OS releases (with warnings) in the "allowed list" of the Scalix Installer, so that modifications of /etc/*release* files become unnecessary.

Specifically, I am looking at
- CentOS 4.x
- SuSE Pro 10.x (non-OSS)

As I don't have those systems up and running, could those who have possibly provide me with the exact (copy/paste) contents of the /etc/redhat-release (or /etc/SuSE-release respectively) files?

:-) Assume this will make installation a again a bit easier.

Many thanks,
Florian.

Good move! Here is the content of my /etc/redhat-release (there is a line break at the end):

Code: Select all

CentOS release 4.3 (Final)

Florian,

/etc/SuSE-Release for 10.0 retail is

SUSE LINUX 10.0 (i586)
VERSION = 10.0 (no line break at the end)

could you reply to this thread when the updated installer is released?

Many thanks - Russ!

Hi Russ,

no final decision on this yet, as it always raises some concerns about official support - and obviously we'll not update the Installer at all for Scalix 10 anymore, given that the Scalix 11 announcement is due very soon.

However, given that there is a simple workaround, I assume this is not going to hold you off anything?

What's your specific usecase and issue with the install?

Cheers,
Florian.

Hi Florian,

perhaps I've not dug enough, but I've searched the site and can't find the workaround. I infer from this thread that I need to create an /etc/release file for a supported platform and the software will install. I'm building a test SLES 10 server prior to a later production implementation .

If you can provide a link to the documented workaround?

Hi Russ,

basically the installer is just looking at the /etc/*release* file to detect the software version. However, the workarounds documented on this site are targeted at "equivalent" OS versions, such as Centos vs. RHEL - for examples search for CentOS. Another example is SuSE 10.x OSS vs 10.x Pro...

However, SLES10 is a different story - this is a completely new distro not equivalent to anything else and actually different in many ways, e.g. SuSE/Novell replaced Heimdal's Kerberos implementation with the MIT one - which is a huge differentce in many authentication situations.

So - nobody that I know of has tested running a copy of Scalix on SLES/10, I must assume that there is some serious trouble ahead because of the changes and should probably advise against trying this, unless you feel really "brave". If so, you will probably need to do a pretty manual install, this is documented in the "raw" docs on the Wiki, www.scalix.com/wiki.

Please note that we would never accept such a system for support - too far off the beaten track. Please also note that the next major release of Scalix, Scalix 11, will actually support SLES/10.

Personal note by side - experience has shown that SuSE/Novell OS versions are never really stable before the first ServicePack comes out - another reason to hold off using this for a production email system.

With an application like eMail that is so mission critical, you absolutely don't want to be on the bleeding edge; also, note that most server hardware vendors will not yet have driver support for SLES10

Hope this help,
Florian.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for the pointer - I think I'll be waiting for release 11 in that case. As this is a pilot build in anticipation of a production installation once I'm satisfied etc, I may well go down to SLES 9 in order to install Scalix 10 - at least that way I'll have some experience of it whilst waiting for Scalix 11!

appended - Actually, maybe I can go to OpenSuse 10 which would be closer to SLES 10!
