POP and IMAP

Postby Niteman » Sat Apr 01, 2006 5:30 pm

OK I finally got the server installed with the right version. I am able to use the Web Client and every thing works fine. Now the issue is in IMAP and POP3. I have tried a few things but neither service is working and my POP client can not connect to server to get mail. I have check the sevices via:

omon pop and Imap and the services are running.

Thanks for your help

On your Scalix server, what happens when you type:

Code: Select all

telnet hostname 110

and

Code: Select all

telnet hostname 143

where hostname is the name of your Scalix server. If that connects, what happens when you do the same thing from a client machine?

Thanks,
Rachel

telnet hostname 110 results: Trying 69.132.128.xxx.xxx which is the ip address of my server but it hangs at that screen. I get the same on the port 143. no reply.

Thanks

Hi. Take a look at the commands you sent. First you went to /var/opt/scalix which is fine, but then you went to /sys, not sys. So, please go into /var/opt/scalix/sys and look for the file mnMapFile.

Thanks,
Rachel

Hi. Let's go back to the telnet command, because IMAP error from the logs may be a red herring. The reason I say that is because you originally said you can use SWA (i.e the Web Client) and since that users the IMAP server, it must be working.

So, you said you typed "telnet [YOUR SCALIX SERVERS FQDN] 110" and "telnet [YOUR SCALIX SERVERS FQDN] 143", but you didn't say where you typed that. Was it on the Scalix server or from your computer? If it was from your Scalix server please post your /etc/hosts file and let me know which hostname you entered on the telnet command line. Then type "ifconfig" and post those results.

If it was on your computer, then it's likely have a firewall or routing issue because if SWA is working, then IMAP is definitely working.

Thanks,
Rachel

I used the telnet command on the Scalix server. This time I used the full name and here are the results:

[root@webserver sys]# telnet webserver.niteforce.com 110
Trying 192.168.1.160...
Connected to niteforce.com (192.168.1.160).
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK Scalix POP3 interface ready on: webserver

[root@webserver ~]# telnet webserver.niteforce.com 143

Connected to niteforce.com (192.168.1.160).
Escape character is '^]'.
* OK Scalix IMAP server 10.0.0.175 ready on webserver.niteforce.com

Here are the results from ifconfig:
[root@webserver ~]# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:BA:4D:2D:69

Here is what I have in the hosts file:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.160 webserver.niteforce.com niteforce.com
~
~
"hosts" 4L, 198C
when I used the full name

The POP and IMAP client is connecting via Lan and there is no firewall runnig on the client. The only thing I can think of is that these ports might be closed on the linux server I am new to Linux and not sure how to check or open them up on Fedora.

Thanks
Niteman

It's very doubtful that the sockets are not available from the server as they are well known sockets. Okay, so from the client, open up a shell/command prompt and type:

telnet 192.168.1.160 110

what do you get? If it doesn't connect type:

traceroute 192.168.1.160 (if it's a Linux client)

or

tracert 192.168.1.160 (if it's a PC client)

and paste those results here.

Thanks,
Rachel

Are you certain you didn't choose to install a firewall when you were installing Linux? Can you check in your /etc/sysconfig subdirectory for a called called iptables. If it exists, please post it here.

Thanks,
Rachel

I am not sure about the fire wall. I think this might be the issue. That is what I meant by opening the ports. Here is the IPtable:
