9.2 Fails Network and Running Services check on Fedora 3

Postby mobrien » Thu Feb 24, 2005 3:20 pm

On a brand new installation of Fedora 3 server the Scalix 9.2 evaluation installer fails the Network and Running services check and does not allow one to go any further.

I have configured the Fedora 3 server with a static address, listed the DNS servers and created a default gateway. I have forward and reverse DNS entries on the DNS server for the Fedora 3 server where Scalix is being installed. I also have the "scalix-default-mail" alias configured. DNS lookups work correctly and point to the Fedora 3 server. Networking is functioning correctly.

I have manually installed both Java SDK and Jakarta-tomcat. I have copied the tomcat startup script to the /etc/init.d directory and edited it for the JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME variables. I have also started the Jakarta server as well.

The "view log" button in the Scalix installer that can be depressed after running the System Check operation states that everything was sucessfull although there are red x's and instalation can not proceed any further.

I am hoping that someone may be able to assist me in pointing me in the right direction as to which area I should investigate next.

OK, it appears that it was a simple matter of the /sbin directory not being in the $PATH variable. The installation wizard could not run ifconfig and chkconfig commands due to this. After appending /sbin to the $PATH variable of the .bash_profile file located in the /root directory the installation hung up creating the Admin User (sxadmin).

I terminated installation and sdded /usr/sbin to the above file due to the installation wizard using "groupadd" and not finding it. When I restarted the wizard it stated the Scalix was already running and hung again. I terminated it again and stopped the "scalix" and "tomcat" processes and restarted it. This time the "System Check" section of the program has a "N/A" listed next to the "Java and Tomcat check" but the others checked sucessfully. After selecting the 'Forward" button to continue the installation it appears to be hanging in the "Installing" section of the program.

The terminal window where I launched the installer displays the following:

Exception in thread Thread-2:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/python2.3/thread.py", line 436, in __bootstrap
self.run()
File "buiild/py23/sxthread.py", line129, in run
TypeError: abort() takes exactly 2 arguments (6 given)

This evaluation is not going very smooth and I am very disapointed thus far. Any help in this matter is appreciated.

Are you running as root ? The /sbin directory should be in the path already

Of course. I believe that if I even attempted to run the installer as non-root that it would complain loudly and quit. The /sbin directory was definately not in the default path under my Fedora installation.

I was eventually able to get Scalix 9.2 installled. It took removing the "scalix-server-eval" rpm manually. I was then able to use the installer wizard to remove the rest of the components and start over.

What saved me was utilizing the output messages received in the terminal window as well as in the scalix-installer log file located in /var/log.

It is real unfortunate that the "view log" option in the installer was totally useless.

It would also be nice if the installer would verify that the $PATH variables that it needed were correct.

After the install completed I have noticed a bug with utilizing the scheduling operation of the web client. What is the best way to let someone know of this?
