Agreed. I would recommend you stick with the distribution's native version, otherwise you are going to run into serious issues along the way when you update your packages. RH, for example, have lower version numbers, but all the security fixes are backported, so your "vulnerable" apache is normally patched against such. If you install a manual package you have to keep up to date yourself, and all the configurations will have to be applied manually.
Anyway, I rarely believe the "latest and greatest" or "bleeding edge" is the ideal setup for a server. I'd rather take slightly older packages that are stable and well-supported.
