ActiveSync Questions

Postby crosscheck » Wed Jun 17, 2009 11:25 pm

I am relatively new to the Scalix world, I have some questions regarding ActiveSync.

Currently we have a Scalix server running CentOS 4. I am trying to get ActiveSync to work on a separate server running CentOS 5.2, but there are some things in the documentation I don't understand.

Under requirements it lists:
"a non-proxied Internet connection on port 443 (https) and/or port 80 (http). It is recommended to only use port 443 (https) for security reasons. " Would this indicate that the server needs to be on the outside of our network (in our DMZ)?

"a local connection to the Scalix server(s), allowing for ports 143 (imap), 25 (smtp), 587 (submission) and 389 (ldap) to be used" Additionally this server will need a separate nic with an internal address on our network to communicate with the Scalix Server? And do I need to open the above ports manually to make the ActiveSync server and Scalix Server talk to eachother?

Right now our iPhones will not authenticate to the ActiveSync server, and I am not sure what piece above I am missing.

Currently I have the ActiveSync server connected to our internal network only.

Thank You.

Possibly yes. The AS server needs to be where it can be reached by your device. Of course, if your iPhone is connected to your internal network using Wifi, having that server on the internal network is fine. If your iPhone is connected to 3G/UMTS/GSM, the AS server needs to be reachable from the Internet, so most likely it will have to be in your DMZ, have a public IP address and a DNS entry.

No separate NIC required, or may depend on the firewall setup. The connections are all FROM the AS server to your Scalix server, so whereever your AS server is in the network, it will need to resolve the Scalix server's hostname (as setup during installation of the AS box), it will need to be able to communicate to the Scalix server using the above-mentioned ports. Actually, one port is missing, this is port 5768/tcp (Scalix Event Server). If that's not in the Docs, good catch, I'll see that fixed.

Hope this helps, Please open a support ticket with Scalix Technical Support if you need further help (Entitlement needed)
