Backup/migrating scalix

Postby sparky » Fri Jan 30, 2009 7:17 pm

Hi, I have Scalix version 11.4 on a fairly old and slow machine and I was wondering about the best procedure to back the system up.

Basically I would like it so that if the system fails on me I can just call the backup off whatever medium and load it into a new install.

Is this possible and what is the best and recommended way of doing this?

So far I have copied the /var directory of the server onto another machine, however I somehow doubt from what I've read that this will work by just loading it back into new servers file system?

I mean especially if the IP address and system node name are changed.

Many thanks

Ok coming back to this topic after ages - I managed to find this link:

http://www.jumpingbean.co.za/blogs/mark ... on_upgrade

A good description of migrating the system from Fedora to Xandros while retaining the IP address and machine name.

To quote:

The basic steps involved installing Xandros Scalix Server on the new machine, doing a Xandros Network update and the copying over the files from /var/opt/NN on the old machine to the new machine

What happens however if I wanted to change the IP address and machine name?

I think the IP address doesn't matter as it's handled by /etc/hosts dir, but what about the node name/machine name instance?

If the machine name say was test; therefor makind /var/opt/NN : /var/opt/tt

could I simply rename /var/opt/tt to the new name of the new machine?

Or alternatively would I have to hack the hell out of the Tomcat connector and other Scalix bits and pieces????

Any pointer as to how to change the node name/system name would be great I think this is gona be my biggest issue!!!

Many thanks

Ok, many thanks for the IP part!

I took at a look at the FQDN page eariler today but it doesn't seem to describe how to update Scalix when you change the system name?

As an example in /etc/hosts file:

Code: Select all

172.24.51.100    my-fqdn    name

where the first and last letters of name (in this case n and e) represent the instance of Scalix being run:

/var/opt/ne

so am I assuming correctly that if I simply move the /var/opt/ne directory to another machine and rename it accroding to what that machine is called the system will work?

Provided I have fixed permissions etc?

If the FQDN is the same as the old machine in this case!

I may have actually found a solution to this!

Stated ironically by the FQDN link which I must have bypassed earlier by skimming through.

Taken from the link it seems like:

The file /opt/scalix/global/config contains the lines:

OMNAME=old
OMHOSTNAME=old.scalix.demo

These can be changed by hand to read:

OMNAME=new
OMHOSTNAME=new.scalix.demo

will do the trick.

Where in my setup /opt/scalix/global/config has:

Code: Select all

OMNAME=ferrari3200
OMHOSTNAME=ferrari3200.domain.com
OMDATADIR=/var/opt/scalix/f0/s
OMAUTOSTART=TRUE

in it where the OMNAME parameter is my machine's name.

So by changing each one of OMNAME, IMHOSTNAME, and OMDATADIR I think things will be ok!

Many thanks for waking me up with that one :) much appreciated!!
