connection and SAC problems after upgrade

So I tried upgrading my server to 11.4.1 (didn't want to upgrade OS to get 11.4.2, suse) and I hit a huge wall, I've been trying everything I can think of and find in the forum to fix it but I've only made things worse. Here's my situation:
1- After the upgrade, I couldn't log into SAC, get message "Could not fetch configuration inormation". Most everything else worked as far as I could tell, including webmail.
2- In effort to fix SAC, followed a forum suggestion to completely uninstall scalix without removing message store. Did that, now from every client when I try to connect to the server via the fqdn I get a connection refused. If I change the host name (imap or pop) to the ip address of the machine, I connect just fine. I can telnet to ports 110 and 143 from the client machine to the fqdn just fine. Also, I'm still unable to access SAC, but webmail still works.

I'm so stuck, any help would be hugely appreciated.

Update:
I figured out issue number 2. Looks like something in my BIND zone file got changed while I was working on the email that took down the name server... I guess that had nothing to do with Scalix. Still unable to get into SAC.

Seems like it might be a java issue, so I tried to point it to a different (older) java installation and it didn't change anything. I also thought maybe RES was the issue so I reinstalled it directly from the RPM, still didn't change. Any thoughts?
