Network check never completes

Postby dvdwlnd » Wed Feb 22, 2006 10:34 pm

Network check never completes, it stops at eth0 and will sit until you cancel it. I am a new user to linux. I am tring to put my OS/2 server to sleep, I have the apache running on linux now but am having trouble with the mail server. As far as I can figure the network is configured right nslookup works it returns the ip of my dyndns service and if I nslookup on the redirect it returns my wan ip. Below is a snipet of the log. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance, David

There have already been several posts on this forum on this issue. It will most likely come down to a dns configuration issue. Please post your etc/hosts file.

What do you get when you use nslookup and enter the server's ip address? Is it your host name? What do you get when you enter your hostname? Is it your server's ip address?

Please post the output of

ifconfig

Please post the output of

hostname --fqdn

Thanks,
Don

After re configuring the DNS (now the only name server in my router and all computers are working). Tried install from command line and now have a new failure.

This error has been reported in the forum a number of times. Please look at the thread at http://www.scalix.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=509&highlight=split.

Postby dvdwlnd » Sun Feb 26, 2006 2:07 am

I am sorry I do not see what could be wrong, in the debug log (below) it says dns is correct. I know someone else had the same error and it was a dns error but I do not see what could be wrong. Any ideas that will help me see what is wrong.
Thanks David

Can you post the contents of /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-id-00:b0:d0: 3e:15:2e

There is no file /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-id-00:b0:d0: 3e:15:2e the only simular file is /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-bus-pci-0000:00:08.0 and I cannot access it. eth-bus-pci-0000:00:08.0 is the hardware configuration name and the hardware name is bus-pci-0000:00:08.0

I am realy getting confused now I thought I was abe to view that file yestreday, not sure which i view or not.

The problem is occurring because the device is not named in the way we would expect.

As one of the system checks, we need to determine if the IP address is a DHCP generated one or not. To do this, we determine the default gateway device and then attempt to lookup the device file.

When we started with RedHat, everything was simple. The device files were called ifcfg-eth0 etc.
With SUSE, the files used to be called ifcfg-eth-id-xx:xx:xx... so it was necessary to get the mac address of the device first.

What has happened in your case is that the file is now called ifcfg-eth-bus-pci... and we're not checking for that. I'm trying to identify if this is a new feature of SUSE 10.0 OSS as the version I downloaded earlier last year created the device with the eth-id instead.

The simplest fix to get you around the problem is to symlink the file with the command:

Code: Select all

ln -s /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-bus-pci-0000:00:08.0 /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-id-00:b0:d0:3e:15:2e

I'll do some more investigation and raise a feature request to have the new-style device file recognised.

Cheers

I have to ask...

Is this a genuine SUSE 10.0 OSS or did you hack /etc/SuSE-release ?

Thanks Dave that fixed it, I got it installed now.

And it is this a genuine SUSE 10.0 OSS I DID NOT hack the /etc/SuSE-release.

Thanks Again
