EMail gateway for dummies

Postby p.g.taboada » Fri Feb 17, 2006 7:12 pm

I read some postings and some docs from the knowledgebase but I am still not sure hot to setup my mail gateway.

Here is my scenario:

my email is p.g.taboada@somereal.domain
scalix owns papick.taboada@somefakelocal.domain

another email I have another.me@someanother.domain
scalix owns anotherme@somefakelocal.domain

my real domains are all on the same server so I can use it as smart relay. I am planning to fetchmail the mails and deliver them locally on my scalix machine.

I think the way in is quite ok this way.

The problem is my way out. my different users have different "real emails".

how do I best setup the delivery? is there any way throgh the scalix console?

Or is this a sendmail issue and thus nothing to do with scalix?

way in (fetchmail)

email -> local delivery to local user

way out

local user -> mapping to real email -> smart relay delivery

where do I setup the mapping?
where do I setup the smart relay?

brgds

I believe you have two choices.

1) do a re-mapping of the senders domain on the relay host; how this is done is outside of our scope because it depends on the software to run the relay.

2) have scalix send the email with the correct sender address in the first place. This is simple. Scalix users can have multiple email addresses, the first of which is always used for sending. All can be used to receive email. So, just setup your users so that the first email address in Scalix is their real address and the second is their "fake" or "local" address. Then everything will be fine! :-)

Hi,

thanks for the answer. Asfar as I understood Scalix config, adding an address is only possible after adding the domain to the list of domais. This way I will start relaying for those "real" domains on my "local" domain, and this is, IMHO, not a solution.

Going through semdmail docs, I found that...

...mailertable should define my smarthost
...genericstable should containg the mappings between local and real addresses
...sendmail.cf should turn on all those features
...the auth config should contain login info for smtp smart host defined in mailertable

compile all three time, restart twice and pray..

I am having some troubles setting up this scenario, and before I start pasting all my configs here I would like to know if this is right way.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think that this is not an unusual use case for a scalix email server, don't?

brgds,

You can certainly do what you want with sendmail, but....

thanks for the answer. Asfar as I understood Scalix config, adding an address is only possible after adding the domain to the list of domais. This way I will start relaying for those "real" domains on my "local" domain, and this is, IMHO, not a solution.

This is not fully correct. The "list of domain" you are referring to has nothing to do with relaying and/or routing - it is just the list of domains offered in the SAC UI for address creation on users. In fact, if you were to manage your users on the command line, you could do without that.

Scalix for most cases has no concept of domains, it is only users with addresses - where those addresses can be on different domains.

hope this helps,
