Scalix on SuSE 9.3 - Installation Report

Postby Chuck » Thu Sep 01, 2005 6:33 pm

Hi,

just installed it. Just as the installer promised, within 15 Minutes but NOT without hickups :-)

1. Go and download Tomcat 5.028 from jakarta.apache.org, untar (in my case: /opt/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28, with symlink on /opt/jakarta-tomcat)
2. create or edit /etc/profile.local and add

Code: Select all

export PATH=$PATH:/opt/scalix/bin

... because tomcat was unable to find external process "omshowrt" (you guys are running external processes from tomcat??? you know that you'll never be able to run that in an untweaked J2EE AppServer, right (not allowed by spec) - so no webmail clustering for us, tomcat has it's issues there... but that's another story :-)

3. My /etc/hosts

Code: Select all

192.168.0.13 scalix.lmis.de scalix

4. Install Scalix server

5. Enjoy the GENIUS webmail interface!

Done. 15 Minutes :-)

THANKS!

p.s. Actually this was a vmware installation, works nicely!

Thanks for the information.

We provide Tomcat 5.0.28 on the install media, there is no need to download it from the Apache website.

There is also a tomcat init.d script available in the admin_resource_kit/ directory which sets the path variable correctly. This script is, currently, RedHat-specific but I have already posted a copy of the SuSE version in the topic http://www.scalix.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=529.

Thanks for the feedback on J2EE AppServer, we don't have any current plans to support our applications through it but we'll use that information if we decide to do it.

Cheers

Dave

VMware and Scalix

Postby Jens » Mon Feb 20, 2006 1:44 pm

Hi Chuck,
I am trying currently to install Scalix v10 within a VMWare machine (RHL4 but CentOS).
But it fails.

After the installer wrote “Configuring Server. Creating Scalix Server message store (may take a few minutes)” nothing happened. Only you could see the rotating hyphen.
In this case I had to shutdown this VM.
During rebooting it stops after starting Sendmail (I am happy - it’s only a virtual machine).

As far as I can see you succeeded, correct?
Did you try the Scalix 10 version too?

Can you explain if this was only a test or a productive server (and if so how many user/clients)? Also I am very interested to know how you set up your network environment to receive messages from outside your firewall.
I am trying to install Scalix for a very small environment, but it has to work stable. (Maybe I want to create the message stores (user data) outside the Linux VM – for easier backup etc.).

My problems are this:
- No creation of message store
- not able to install tomcat (no way, it says something like not correct gzipped, it doesn’t matter from which mirror downloaded), I am not sure if this will be managed by the Scalix installer in a better way
- possible problems with network configuration (not sure if all was correct Linux-VMWare-Windows-outside world, the installer accepted the configuration)

Please can you tell me if the message store was built instantly in your case? Or did it last some hours? I had to interrupt the process after nearly an hour.
What about the network settings, can you tell me some ideas?
Many thanks for any information about your experiences.

Jens
