Multi Server Setup.

Postby kanderson » Fri Jan 28, 2005 11:59 am

I'm setting up a medium sized install, which will have 1 main server, and approximately 10 remote offices which send and receive through the main server at the head office.

The installation will initially roll out everyone off the head office server, and then one by one, the remote offices will have servers built and added.

Will it be easiest if I create a separate mailnode on the main server for each of the envisioned servers, and then create users in the separate mailnodes? This should allow me to move them to a different server later, without impacting internal email since the mailnodes remain constant. Or am I better off just creating 1 mailnode on the main server, and then using aliases after the fact?

I'm sure I'm not the first person to build something like this, and I'd love to hear the advice of people who have taken this path before, so I can benefit from their experiences.

Thanks
Kev.

If you have a mailnode for each planned server on the main machine, you're going to need to move everyone at the same time as you move the mailnode.

Another way, provided that your user names (S/G/I/Q) are unique, is you can add the general.cfg tweak:

SR_RESOLVE_MASK=4

and restart the Service Router

This will cause the router to do a directory look up for an entry matching S/G/I/Q from the recipient address if it cannot find a match exactly for the original recipient. This means that you can move the users one-by-one as required.

If your S/G/I/Q names are not unique, you're going to have to go back to plan A.

Cheers

I knew that I'd need to move them one entire mailnode at a time if I went that route, but that other option is wicked.

Thanks for the advice.

Kev.
