Installing the Information store on a different partition

Postby kandersen » Wed May 09, 2007 7:43 pm

Just curious… I'm experimenting with Scalix 11 on Fedora Core 6. With Fedora 6 or any version of Linux are there any advantages or disadvantages on placing the Info Store on a separate partition from the partition that the Scalix is installed on?

Using a DELL PowerEdge 2950 Raid 5 with four drives 136GB (un-partitioned)

If we go ahead and purchase Scalix there will be approximately 140 mailboxes and running Spam Assassin

Thank You

Hi

The main reason for installing the data in a seperate partition is to increase the unmber of spindles, this increases performance.

Typical seneros would be to install the OS on one hard drive or array and the data on another hard drive or array. As the number of users grows to be many hundereds then seperating the /temp directory out to another spindle can also help.

As a RAID5 Array is seen to the OS as 1 spindle there is no effective way increasing the performance of that spindle normal partitioning of the drive or array to / & /var or if you are going to be using LVM and mounting the LVM to /var/opt/scalix is about all you can do. I have had more than a couple of failures when I did not create a /var partition (luckily in VM sessions) which Scalix will expand out to /var/opt/scalix.

Best of luck

Please note also that RAID 5 will give you poor performance .

The release notes at http://downloads.scalix.com/.community/11.0.4/RELEASE_NOTES.html#supported explain why we recommend RAID 1+0.

Cheers

Dave
