Scalix 11 on openSUSE 10.2

Postby Beaujolais » Tue Jan 02, 2007 2:25 pm

I understand it's not officially supported but I'm wondering if anybody tried to install and run Scalix 11 on openSUSE 10.2?

Does it work? Any issues?

Thank you, I'd appreciate any inputs :)

I tried

I tried and I am stuck with setting the postgres password. It says that that the database scalix does not exist. Up to that point everything seems ok. I can't test too much, because I have no idea how. I just followed the instructions in the HowTo. There are some issues.
If you install the server.rpm it will not work. Make sure all the libraries you need are installed. Some of them will be missing in /usr/lib but will be in /usr/lib64 (on my system they are). Force install!

lib64 libraries are 64bit versions. as the scalix server rpm is a 32-bit rpm, this cannot work under any circumstances.

I'm not saying you can't get it to work successfully on opensuse 10.2 (I haven't tried though, given the simplicitiy of the install on a supported platform I find it pretty much wasted time these days), but having to use the "force" option on the rpm install will definitely get you into a situation where things WON'T work. they simply cant.

your other problem is caused by the manuall install process and the process description at this point only valid for debian installs. see my other post on 10.2 somewhere else in this forum.

One thing I am interested in is how to test. It is basically the sasl stuff that is partially available as 32Bit Binaries and partially as 64Bit only. Strangly enough all processes seem to work.
The reason why I am using a unsupported SuSE Version is also pretty simple. No other version runs on the hardware. 10.1 looses the CD Rom during installation and it lost the hard disks after an online update.
In the manual install instructions there might be some lines missing telling you how to get the postgres stuff installed. Finally I had to throw away the postgres data directory and recreate it using the postgres init script. Another thing is, that the tomcat needs a lot of manual help, until it comes up with scalix.
Currently I am at point where I can create users in the adminstration gui and log into webmail as this user.
I would really be interested in finding out what does work on 10.2 and what will not work.

i think actually your best bet is to try the suse package with the installer; what the installer does is only check the /etc/SuSE-release file for it's contents. Guess when you fill this with 10.1-style-contents, it will continue and allow to install.

You'll need the SASL packages. If you don't have more than 4GB of RAM, i actually recommend that you use the 32 bit version of the OS.

Usually driver support in redhat is somewhat more organized. have you considered fedora core 5?

(Please note that there will be no support for your configuration, unless you change platforms!) :-)

You need to additionally compile python 2.4 and python 2.4 gtk stuff for the installer, because suse upgraded to python 2.6 and the installer is byte compiled.

scalix then runs fine for me.

cheers

I found a round about way of doing it.
I installed OSS10.1 & Scalix. Confirmed it was running & accessible.
Then I upgraded OSS10.1 to 10.2. During the upgrade the install promted me with compatability conflicts. It was the scalix app & everything connected to it. I told it to KEEP scalix, it didn't promt me to do anything else. All the other required apps were locked by the scalix install. The upgrade completed & everything was working perfectly.
