Scalix Install Dies during creation of Message Store

Postby MacDaddy » Fri Jul 28, 2006 11:52 am

Trying to install an eval of Scalix on SUSE 9.3 running under zLinux. Had some initial errors with dependencies but fixed those. Once I get to the part of the install where it is creating the store the install just aborts and I also lose connection to the host (I am using vnc to connect to it). I can then vnc back into the host and I have uninstalled/re-installed several times with the same results. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before? Any help or input would be appreciated.

Mac Daddy,

which version of Scalix are you using? The current Scalix 10.0 no longer supports SuSE 9.3.

Could you please post the installer log (/var/log/scalix-installer-......) and if it really happens during the message store creation phase and your /var/opt/scalix already exists, the /var/opt/scalix/sys/install/log file?

Thanks,
Florian.

Florian,

Thanks for the help but we got this figured out. The problem was that we were using VNC to connect to the Scalix VM guest. VNC connected just fine but when creating the message store during the install some inetd processes got reset and this will result in the VNC session getting reset as well. We used Exceed to access the server and the install completed just fine. We notified Scalix of this problem and they are adding it to their documentation.

Mac Daddy,

I've experienced the same issue.

However, please note that since Scalix 10.0, you can actually run without graphical install. If you connect to your server through a normal SSH session (without the DISPLAY variable being set) or if you start scalix-installer with the --cli switch, you will run the installer in text-only mode.

This is highly recommended if not working on a reliable X display due to this kind of problems.

Cheers,
Florian.
