reverse DNS/dynamic IP --> if you want to use only SMARTH

Postby Jens » Fri Apr 07, 2006 8:05 am

Hello,
If I want to use a Scalix Server on an internal machine which has the following network environment, what would you suggest?

- dynamic IP on the first Server which connects to the Internet (incl. firewall, there is also a httpd installed)
- external DNS Server which points towards the external IP (which means the first Server) = A-record
- static internal IP (e.g. 192.168.0.30)
- we want to exchange e-mails only via smart_host (collect mails via fetchmail, which works fine and send via smarthost – not configured yet)

My problem is that I don’t know how to configure the SWA access in a proper way.
On the first Server I point all requests for mail.server.com at port 80 towards the internal IP of the Scalix Server (e.g. 192.168.0.30), but an access.
Internally it works, but not externally.

Any suggestions, thanks in advance.

You would have to open your firewall to allow external http/port 80 traffic through to your internal scalix server.

To configure sendmail to send to a smart host edit /etc/mail/sendmail.cf and modify:

# "Smart" relay host (may be null)
DS

to read

# "Smart" relay host (may be null)
DSsmarthost.domain.ext

and restart sendmail.

Don

Only open port 80, that's all?
This means only if there is no security in place.

I have done/tried this (via httpd and virtual server on the first server to route all port 80 traffic to the internal IP) already as a first step before I would integrate SSL, but after open the website (www.mail.website.com/webmail/ which points to the dynamic IP of the first Server) the web services wants to go to the internal IP adress of the Scalix server.
So I have no success to reach the webmail - web service.

Therefore my exact question what would be the best way if there isn't a reverse DNS in place because of the dynamic IP adress.
I am not worried about the Smarthost - this will work, but about the web site access.

Is the reverse DNS necessary because of the e-mail transfer (yes; this is only/mostly possible if you have this reverse DNS zone - but with a Smarthost this should not be necessary) or also because of the integration of Tomcat? How I can integrate Scalix without reverse DNS under this premise?

Best regards and thanks for your answer.

Sorry to ask again.
Any ideas if there isn't any possibility to have a reverse DNS?
Best regards

Thanks,

Sorry, no.
I got not the anwer which I am looking for.
Again, it seems this solution is not able to work in a private/SME environment which the word "Community" implied.

It's an very easy and simple question: Can this solution work behind a private DSL-access which means without fixed IP adress?? And if so, how?

The proxy question is only a further step whithin the network, but doesn't answer the above question. The main question - I believe - lies in the reverse DNS (necessary, yes or not). If the answer is yes, this solution can't be used in a privat environment, because the majority doesn't have a fixed IP.

I would like if a official SCALIX Support would answer, because I am loosing my strong interest, step by step.
Please have a look at this: http://www.scalix.com/community/viewtopic.php?p=10168

Many thanks again...

Jens,

I've replied back to you on your original question in the other thread.

To give you the official Scalix answer: Scalix DOES NOT require reverse DNS to function. However, the external applications like Apache and Sendmail need to be configured to masquerade as your external domain.

Cheers

Dave
