Backup Options

Postby cbandrew » Wed Apr 19, 2006 10:11 am

Hello,

I am testing a Scalix install for my company. We currently use Veritas NetBackup and was wondering if it will work with Scalix? If not, what other options are available? and finally what options are available for single user/message restores?

thanks.

So to backup the information store using Veritas, you will need to do two things.

1) install (or move) your information store (/var/opt/scalix) to a logical volume under control of LVM. This will allow you to take snapshots of your information store.

2) take a look at the sxbackup script that is supplied on in the admin_resource_kit directory of the software distribution. This script can be easily modifed to work with your backup program. Note: that this program will automatically pause Scalix, take a snapshot, then un-pause Scalix.

Yet another option is to use the omcpoutu command. This command will dump a users *entire* mailbox into a sngle file. This file can then be used as input to "omcpinu" to restore a users entire mailbox. It can be used to restore to an alternate location and then the data accessed such that a single object (message, contact, folder, etc) can be restored.

But wait, theres more. There is also a third party vendor that is developing a backup solution that integrates with Scalix. I dont have a lot of information on this topic. Hopefully one of the other regular contributers will jump in and provide more info.

You might also want to check out SEP's Sesam solution (www.sep.de), which explicitly supports Scalix, allows for Singe User Restore and Backup from within the UI today; they are working on a version that will do Single Item Restore (Email, Calendaring) right now.

Apart from that, Darrell is correct, due to the design of the Scalix message store, any backup solution that is able to backup and recover filesystem objects under Linux will work with Scalix server. Differences will largely be UI related...
