I have one user who is unable to check his email with SWA. He has no problems using Outlook, but needs SWA as well since he is often out of the office. When He tries to access webmail, the process hangs at "Accessing Mailbox" After several minutes he receives the error:


After clicking OK, he can access his calendar and deleted items folder, but all other folders appear empty. If he hovers over the Inbox folder the popup says it contains 838 items. Clicking send/receive has no effect. If he clicks on any folder other than deleted items, He receives the same error as above.
He has the same problems accessing mail with both IE and Firefox, however, the error message only displays in Firefox.

I have tried recreating the SIS index for this account, but this did not resolve the issue.

Have you tried clearing the user's imap cache? or an omscan on the account?

I have ran an omscan on the account. I'm not sure how to clear the imap cahce.

Ran the script to clear the IMAP cache, but still getting the same error.

Running top while trying to log user in to webmail reveals the following:



We are also having some problems with users receiving incoming mail. It will hit sendmail, but it takes several hours before users receive it. Checking the Fatal log for that time period reveals:



I do not know if these issues are related, but they did start occurring around the same time. At least one of the gateway steering errors is related to the user who is having trouble with webmail.

You have too many imap connections hitting the server. You can increase the following parameters to get around this.....

In /var/opt/scalix/??/s/sys/general.cfg

change the following...

# These tweaks limit the number and rate of IMAP connections to the
# server. The IMAP_CONNECTION_LIMIT simply restricts the total number of
# connections to the server -- note that many IMAP clients have several
# connections for each IMAP session. The IMAP_CONNRATE_LIMIT restricts
# the rate at which clients can connect to the server, in this case, at

IMAP_CONNECTION_LIMIT=500
IMAP_CONNRATE_LIMIT=15

after saving the setting restart scalix for it to take effect.

Thanks I will try that. I found that the delays in the email delivery was caused by a malformed email that was wreaking havoc with our spam filter causing a backup in the delivery queue and not related to scalix. Because of this we were having mass amounts of email hitting the server at once which may have caused the IMAP errors. I haven't seen any since fixing that issue.

I'm also going to be upgrading to the 11.4.3 release this afternoon. Hopefully this will resolve some of the other issues we are having.

After upgrading, and much struggle trying to resolve an issue that was keeping me from accessing webmail. I am happy to say that this issue is resolved.

If you are getting the same error as stated earlier "Maximum IMAP connection rate exceeded, sleeping." you should increase your imap settings in general.cfg as stated earlier.

IMAP_CONNECTION_LIMIT=500
IMAP_CONNRATE_LIMIT=15

If you are getting a user who has "cannot display messages for <folder>" then try clearing the imap cache for that user.

If you have a different error then post that.

While upgrading to 11.4.3 isn't a magic bullet to fix all your problems it is highly recommended that you upgrade to this version for the latest patches and bug fixes. it is a relatively straightforward upgrade.
