Single user causes huge number of Jakarta errors

Postby peteb » Thu Jan 19, 2006 2:51 pm

One of my users is really upsetting Jakarta.

He's runnung on an XP machine with Firefox 1.0.7, but NO Norton or anything of that type. Just Zone Alarm.

Code: Select all

Hi peteb,

Norton Personal Firewall application. If you are using one of these applications, disable Privacy Control and log into Scalix Web Access again.

Zone Alarm is a firewall so the same idea applies.

Thanks,
Don

Sure it's a firewall, but it doesn't have any privacy controls.

What exactly do I need to OK in Zone Alarm? You can't be saying that SWA won't work with a firewall in the path.

Well, most of our customers are using firewalls in some way and in most cases, SWA just works fine.

Believe it usually comes down to one of two things
1) SWA is mainly a Java Script application, and a very complex one as well. Any filtering on JavaScript will probably make it unworkable.
2) SWA is supported on IE and Mozilla/Firefox. Due to some differences in those browser's JavaScript implementations, SWA contains browser-specific code - therefore it needs to be able to detect the browser correctly. Any firewall setting that will hide the browsers identity/type is very likely to create problems.

Can you temporarily disable your firewall on the PC and see if SWA works? If so, then obviously turning on your protection options one by one is the way to do.

We haven't had any specific reports on this particular firewall product.

Florian.

I am using Zonealarm on my PC at home when I use Windows with no problems at all. There are no privacy options you can set, in fact there are no options at all if you use the free version of it. As Florian suggested, disable the firewall and retest. If that takes care of the error messages, have the user reinstall Zonealarm.

If the problem persists, run a network link integrity test. It maybe a faulty NIC or bad line with errors at play here. One easy way to do this is to copy a fairly large file over the network a couple of times and check the integrity. On Linux systems, use md5sum filename before the copy and then after the copy. If there is any discrepancy, you have a network issue.

Another common issue is Microsofts Antispy tool interfering with SWA. Make sure this is uninstalled.

Cheers,

Sascha.

I use MS Antispy with no issues at all on any of my home computers. Connect to Scalix just fine, been using it for months.
