Being a RSS fan, I'm kinda wondering what the function of the variable "rssClient" in partner.xml is.

This is a holdover from some functionality that was built into the product that SWA was based on. We don't currently use this setting in SWA.
To second guess your follow-up question, we don't have any immediate plans to introduce RSS features into SWA as it is not a frequently requested feature. That's not to say we won't ever do it.
