How to use external SMTP with Scalix Connect

Postby TheDude » Sun Nov 27, 2005 4:56 pm

How do I use an external SMTP (my ISP’s) with Scalix connect? I want to upgrade some Outlook users to it who are currently using POP3 with Outlook (with the ISP’s SMTP setup in the account settings) but when I do this they will automatically have the Scalix server for the outbound IP and this wont do. My scalix servers IP is considered as part of a DSL neighborhood block of IP’s so mail originating from it is rejected by some picky servers, however, if I just send my outbound mail through my ISP’s SMTP (I have the ISP’s server in my partner.xml file so my web client users can send email to whomever they want and my Outlook users with POP3 have the ISP’s SMTP plugged in as well, but, how do I fix it for the Enterprise user? Thanks for the 25 enterprise user accounts, but, they are useless to me if I can’t fix this.

We Scalix Connect, your connection between Outlook and the Scalix server is via MAPI, so all message retrieval and message submission is handled directly by MAPI (passed through to the UAL protocol on the Scalix server).

Outlook itself does provide the ability to include "Internet Mail" services in the Outlook profile to both retrieve email from an ISP and send (via SMTP) using different accounts.

Unfortunately, this configuration is not supported by Scalix as is detailed in the Release Notes.

However, in this case it appears the issue is more to do with the IP address of the Scalix server submitting SMTP messages to the outside world. I think there are other potentially other solutions to this issue, e.g. to use a smart or relay host (configured in Sendmail) or potentially setting up mailertable entries for specific "picky" hosts.

I'm pretty sure we'd recommend that the scalix server's IP address is not considered blocked as part of the DSL neighbourhood and it maybe better to talk to you ISP such that the IP (and the reverse IP lookup) resolves to your specific hostname and hence doesn't get blocked.

Hope that helps.
Cheers,
JG
