Subjects will dissapear from messages in preview pane

Postby scape » Wed May 17, 2006 11:31 pm

Hi All,

I am experience a problem with the MS Outlook connector. I have noticed this problem on a few machines, it seems that occasionally when changing to a different folder in your Inbox, all the subject's will dissapear.

So far I have found a workaround to get these to display again. This involves right clicking on the Arrange By: box and going to Custom View > Reset current view.

This seems to bring back the subjects in the preview but they will without fail dissapear again soon enough. It seems to happen on some clients more than others (All clients noted are running Outlook 2003 with the latest Scalix connector).

Has anyone noticed similar issues and have a fix?

Thanks and Regards,

Jared.

I just noticed that was happening to me. To get this back to default behaviour I had to select View/Arrange By/Current View/Customize Current View/Reset Current View.

Thanks for the reply, but I already mentioned that solution in my original post. What I'm asking is if there is anyway to stop it from happening? It is becoming a real pain in the a** and it is happening on many machines.

It is annoyances like this that tempt me to ditch Scalix and move to Exchange.

Regards,

Jared.

My only other ideas are to move the preview pane further to the right and the subject shows again. Also, select to have the preview pane to display on the bottom.

Don

Ok further on the problem, resizing the preview pane to virtually nothing does work. One thing it also does it identify the underlying problem.

It seems that the Scalix connector likes to insert a new field to arrage emails by, a 'blank' field. This field has no name and comes before all the other fields such as From, Subject etc.

Either removing this field or resetting the current view will fix it temporarily. Sometimes for a day or other times as soon as you open that same folder again the problem reappears.

Below is screen show showing this phantom field in the fields list. You can reach this under View > Arrange by > custom > fields

Thank you for troubleshooting this! I'll enter a bug in our developer's database.

Best wishes,
Don

null field entry

One of my QA team members provided this fix

You can actually correct this by doing the following:

1. close out of outlook
2. click on start >> Run
3. type in: outlook.exe /cleanviews
4. click on OK

This should re-open your outlook (manually open if it doesn't)

You should now have the ability to navigate through outlook without losing your subject...or having the null entry appear in your field settings.

Not to rehash a thread that's several months old, but I am having the same problem and just found this discussion.

Most of my users are using the Smartcache beta connector, and although I've not heard any complaints about missing subject lines, I can't guarantee it's not happening to others. It is, however, happening to me, and I'm using the standard Scalix Connector that comes with the Scalix 10 distribution.

Since I've recently patched our server up to 10.0.5.1, I might assume that this problem is a fuction of the connector, and not the server. Has this bug been addressed since this June posting?

hello,

first a big thanks: SmartCache really rocks :-)
But i also have the problem of disappearing subject lines, the first of our clients also...

Is there a new fix around?
Cleanviews is nice, but it deletes all of the custome views you defined for tasks etc...

Cleanview is only a temporary solution as well. It'll reoccur even using it. The problem exists still through 11.0.1.

so, this really seems a problem with the views. Now, Scalix does not create or control these views, it's outlook and our connector only takes whatever outlook gives it and stores it on the server. This could still mean that there is a problem on the side of Scalix Connect.

When going up the thread, there is the mentioning of an empty phantom column that gets inserted into the view definition. For those seeing this in 11.0.2, do you also have that phantom column? If so, if you remove it in the view definition (without resetting the view), does that fix your problem?

if so, does the problem persist when you export the mailbox using sxmboxexp and reimport it into another user using sxmboximp?

It actually should as the views are stored inside the mailbox. if so, could someone delete most of the content (maybe leave one non-sensitive message in) of the mailbox and provide us with the sxmboxexp file for the box so that we could have a look at the definition of that phantom column?

I am seeing this for a few of our users and wanted to know if anyone did find a solution.

Thanks
