Receiving Mail from Pop3 accounts

Postby jpinder70 » Wed May 10, 2006 2:51 pm

I got everything up and running smoothly wiht our Scalix server but some of our users have external pop3 accounts and need access to those accounts too... I know this works in Exchange because I tested it; but it does not work in Scalix Connect for Outlook.

I get the following error when receiving pop e-mail:

! Task "servername.com -Receinging' reported error (0x80040102): 'The requested operation cannot be performed on tis account'

Here is what I did on my setup>

1. install outlook 2003
2. updated outlook 2003
3. install the scalix client for MS Outlook
4. added a pop 3 account to my Scalix profile
5. Hit Send/Receive

That's when I get the error. when it's trying to download mail from the pop3 server; if there is no mail the operation goes smoothly.

Any Ideas?

From the release 10 release notes...

Scalix Connect for Microsoft Outlook supports simultaneous use of additional services such as PST and LDAP address lookup, but not Internet Mail Service or the Microsoft Exchange Service in the same profile.

Are these features going to be included in a later release?

I am currently experiencing the same problem with Outlook 2003.

I had previously been using Outlook 2000. I was able to use both the Scalix Outlook connector and a POP3 account at the same time. I was experiencing a small problem with the POP3 mail though. For some reason the POP3 messages were was being flagged as unsent mail. I assumed that this was a problem with outlook 2000, and I therefore upgraded to Outlook 2003. Now I have this problem.

I am wondering what the Scalix Outlook Connector has to do with Internet mail? Doesn't Outlook handle internet mail (POP3 or IMAP) separately from the Scalix/Exchange connection? If so, then why would the Outlook Connector be interfering with the POP3 mail channel?

The way I understand it is that it have to do with how a mail service is defined. A mail service has the concept of being a "default delivery location". Having multiple services that all claim to Outlook to be able to store mail confuses it internally, and you see strange behaviour, like you mentioned.

I ran into this issue also. It was a deal breaker. Until I can add a POP3 account along side the Scalix account I'm dead in the water. Aside from that, Scalix is awesome.

You can always use fetchmail to go get the mail off the remote server and deliver it locally to Scalix.

That works from a technical point of view but it's not practical and only solves half the problem. Users think email should be instant. If they are expecting a message they want to hit Send/Receive and have it show up. If I take that away, they will be very upset. Secondly, using Scalix to collect the POP email is a one way street. Users need to be able to send email from the account also.

Currently, someone else is handling the email for our domain name. If a user sends email from Scalix it will be send with a temporary and ugly domain name. They need to be able to send with the correct email address until I bring our domain in house. And suppose I didn't want to use Scalix for all of our email. It would be nice to use it to keep a central copy of user email just in case their computer crashes I'll have a backup.

Also, I would like to use the Calendar. I don't suppose there is a small program (not SWA) that will open the calendar only?

Use forwarding

Postby molsen » Tue May 23, 2006 10:30 pm

I used the fetchmail solution which worked ok except for the delay and the fact the users needed to expose their passwords to the person setting up fetchmail.

I then decided to go to my pop account and use the mail forward feature there to forward mail to my Scalix account. I was also able to set a flag to have the mail deleted from the popmail site after it was forwarded.

I then setup a rule in Scalix to search for the pop mail address in the message header and move any mail from that account into the appropriate folder I designated for those emails.

It works instantaneously and I don't have to expose my mail password to anyone.

Hope that helps as a workaround for some folks.

A reason to uninstall?

Postby Monti » Thu Jul 20, 2006 3:52 am

Hi,

after setting up everything, I was looking forward to set up my new Profile based on Scalix and setting up additional POP3-Accounts. Then I ran into the problems described above and finally found this post.

I cannot believe it!! I mean, for me this would be a reason to get rid of everything again? Since I am using a couple of E-Mail services and want to reply using the corresponding address, this makes everything quite senseless.

Is there a plan or timeline to solve this issue?

Thanks

Peter

I agree with this being an issue. We have users in our sales division that need to send mail on behalf of other properties (domains). I am not hosting all of the properties on the scalix box, they are being hosted by other pop servers elswhere. Wouldn't it be nice if they could use a single outlook profile to accomplish this.

I know this isn't a bug, per se, it is a feature request. A feature that a large number of your installed base are requesting. Any chance of getting this implemented or submitting it for consideration?

Thanks,

Maybe I am not understanding this problem, but I have a POP account setup in Outlook right along with my Scalix account.

I can send from the Verizon account too.

Setting up - not a problem

Postby Monti » Wed Jul 26, 2006 4:03 pm

Hi,

yes, I set up the same - but I was not able to receive mails. I always received error 0x80040102 ("Der angeforderte Vorgang kann für dieses Konto nicht ausgeführt werden") which is something like "The request could not be finished" or similar.

Sending didn't work correctly, too. The were not sent using the POP3/SMTP setting but using the scalix server even though I changed the Accout which should be used to send.

Well, so far the same with me. But my Outlook (2003, german) did get the mail but I don't know where it is. It disapears somewhere on the road to my inbox.

Is there any hint when this problem will be solved or whether it wil be solved at all? Because Scalix is until now the solution that comes nearest to Exchange. Yet it will be of no use to us if it claims Outlook exclusivly for its operations.

POP mail with Scalix

Postby kdelyria » Wed Aug 16, 2006 2:28 pm

I have multiple email accounts that I want to run along side Scalix. But here is the problem, if I redirect to mail to a personal folder the Scalix calendar is not shared. If I use the default Scalix location my POP mail disappers into a black hole.

If I can not resolve this I am going to to have to trash the Scalix setup
