Outlook 2007 Crash Issues

Postby SidebandSamurai » Wed May 05, 2010 7:42 pm

Hello Everyone.

I am having a problem with Outlook 2007 crashing and asking to restart. Several of my users have complained about this issue but I have not been able to track it down until it happened to me.

I was deleting Junk mail out of my Inbox when it occurred. This is the information I received from Outlook when the crash occurred:

Code: Select all

Problem signature:

  Application Name:   OUTLOOK.EXE

  Fault Module Version:   11.4.6.9214
  Fault Module Timestamp:   4afa954b
  Exception Code:   c0000005
  Exception Offset:   001d7d60
  OS Version:   6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1

You will notice that SXMAPI32.dll caused the crash. You will also see that I am on 11.4.6. SmartCache is enabled. Operating system is Windows 7 with UAC turned off.

Please let me know if you need any more info. As this problem comes up with other users, I will post updates so that you can see what other users in my network are experiencing.

Also, I am still seeing this error in the Scalix Log:

Code: Select all

4:43:29 PM  Error returned by Scalix Server: PUTSYNC (SYNCMOD) for item 000a24f7b71df9e7 returned error 2501 (Cannot modify a component of a Master Copy (shared) item)

Could this error be related to this Outlook crash?

Hi everyone,

I have another crash. Again it seems fairly reproducible. I was deleting a bunch of emails, outlook 2007 is sorted by subject, and there were about 20 messages I was deleting when the crash occurred. Notice that the faulted module was sxmapi32.dll

Code: Select all

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:   APPCRASH
  Application Name:   OUTLOOK.EXE
  Application Version:   12.0.6514.5000

  Exception Code:   c0000005
  Exception Offset:   001d7d60
  OS Version:   6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1

Please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

I have also noticed that the Scalix Smartcahe had a green flashing X. I did not touch it thinking it would close. It was only after I double clicked clicked on the X that the Scalix plugin for outlook finally closed.

The microsoft reports about outlook crashing are probably not going to get you anywhere.

Outlook instability with the Scalix Connector usually comes down to the following:

1. service packs and outlook updates
2. outlook plugins

Make sure you have all patches and service packs applied to outlook.

Then check what plugins you have enabled via the trust center, both com addins and exchange extensions. Usually one of them breaks the scalix connector. Antivirus plugins, business contact manager, desktop search, itunes are all known to crash scalix. Post back what plugins you have enabled.

Hi Les

The Microsoft reports about outlook crashing are probably not going to get you anywhere.

Yea, but when the crash is coming directly from Scalix, I thought I would give this a try, I am extremely frustrated about this instability, and it happens to be one of the partners of this law firm that is having the problem.

Outlook instability with the Scalix Connector usually comes down to the following:

I can answer part of this question now. I have all the latest Office service packs and outlook updates installed. Plus I have uninstalled Office and Re-installed it. Since then the partner has only complained once that outlook has crashed. I have asked him if he is still having issues, and if so I will remote into his system to get the plugin list for you.

He has since replied to my email, and told me that he has had only one single crash since the Re-Install whereas before it would be a minimum of 4 a day. This looks promising!! :) :) The re-install was last Wednesday.

Since a lot of these posts were specifically from me ... that is actually deleting Email from my inbox, I can tell you the following:

Windows 7 Ultimate, all patches applied
Office 2007 All patches applied

Actually here is a screen shot of the Plug-ins page.

I can see I have the ITunes plug in (sheesh) so I will disable that. I had installed Itunes to help my sister out.

Thanks a lot for all your help.

Sincerely,

Sideband Samurai

yep, disable itunes and the following:

abacus ?????
groove (if your not using it, may as well disable to be sure)
onenote (if your not using it, may as well disable to be sure)
pdfmoutlook (definitely upsets scalix)
windows search email indexer (definitely upsets scalix)

Check also the Exchange Client Extensions as well as com-addins.

Hi Les:

Ok, I have disabled the following:

Itunes, Groove, Onenote, pdfmoutlook,

One question: Windows Search Email indexer, This is a critical part of Outlook. Disabling this feature also disables the search function in Outlook. Should I really do that? The office manager really depends on this feature. I suppose I could disable it temporarily to see if the lockups stop.

Abacus plug-in CANNOT be disabled. Abacus (www.abacuslaw.com) if you are not familiar with the software is the Law Practice software this law firm uses, this plug-in allows staff to link E-mail communication from their clients into Abacus where their clients case is tracked. This is a critical feature of the law practice software and I can not disable it even if its causing Scalix plug in problems.

Les
Check also the Exchange Client Extensions as well as com-addins.

The following Exchange client extensions are enabled:

Code: Select all

AVG Exhange Extension
Scalix ACL Extension
Scalix Delegates Extension
Scalix Menu Extensions
Scalix Out of Office
Scalix Offline Working Extensions
Redemption Helper Outlook Extension for Abacus
Exchange Extensions property pages

Should I be disabling the Exchange Extensions property pages also?

Not sure if it's still an issue, but I have had the AVG (and ClamWin) Outlook plugins cause Scalix some grief in the past. May be fixed in newer versions, though.

how are you sorting?
I get this error anytime I sort emails by FROM and try to delete many messages. If I set the sort to the default (Date) and search and delete many it works fine.
