We had the following problems:
Synchronization between Outlook and a users salesforce account (i.e. the account the user could log in to via the web) was incredibly slow.
If you modified contacts in salesforce you would end up with a duplicate when you sync'd back to Outlook (the sync process would not recognize that the contact on SF was a newer version of an existing contact.)
This was with Scalix 11.4.3 server, Outlook 2003 and the 10.0.366 Outlook plugin.
However, I believe that Scalix themselves use Salesforce so our experience may have been unique.
The following issues may have also complicated things:
end users installed software from apple and google to sync Outlook calendar/contacts with personal accounts.
we were not using the 11.x plugin (which we found to be problematic, at least with initial versions.)
we had an add-in deduplication process with the SF account to dedupe contacts between users- thus a problem with one user could affect all users.
