Outlook locks up/crashes when editing and saving a shared contact.

We are running Scalix Server 11.4.2 and Outlook Connector 11.4.2.

We have always seen this problem on multiple computers at every version from 11.3.x to now.

We are using Outlook 2207 with Service Pack 1 in non-caching mode. (I am downloading SP2 right now and I will post back if it makes a difference.)

We have the following COM Add-ins enabled:
Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server Colleague Import Add-In
Microsoft Outlook Mobile Service
Outlook Change Notifier
Scalix Rules Processing Engine
Windows Search Email Indexer

I'd try dropping the windows search indexer, if you dont need sharepoint then untick that as well. The rest are normally OK. I think outlook 2007 sp1 should work fine.

Sometimes some odd add-ins end up in "Exchange Client Extensions", what is enabled there? possibly an AV plugin? what AV do you use and does it integrate into outlook?

Are we talking a huge amount of contact records in the public folder, say thousands? Maybe there is some obscure limit.....

All right, here's the skinny...
I am now running Scalix 11.4.4 and Outlook Connector 11.4.4 with virtually the same results.

I have disabled all com add-ins except for 'Scalix Rules Processing Engine'.

Under 'Exchange Client Extensions' I have the following:
Symantec Antivirus Outlook Protection
Scalix ACL Extension
Scalix Delegates Extension
Scalix Menu Extensions
Scalix Out of Office
Scalix Offline Working Extensions
Exchange Extensions property pages
Redemption Helper Outlook Extension

These are all enabled. I tried disabling all non-scalix extensions, but when I close and reopen Outlook, they are re-enabled.

With the way it sits, I am able to make one or two changes in a public address book, then Outlook will hang on the next attempt to save a contact.

I did discover a "work-around". If I move the contact to my own contacts, I can modify it all I want and then move it back to the public contacts without issue.

This behavior is the same on all of our workstations.

It is probably also worth noting that the issue has followed us across a server reload (granted I did migrate the Scalix install).

I'd still try to disable the symantec AV plugin. This may need to be done via the symantec av program itself (i.e. tell it not to integrate into outlook).

Does this behaviour happen only on existing contacts in the public folder? If you create multiple new contacts in there can you modify them without outlook crashing?

I would also perhaps try exporting the contacts to pst, deleting the public folder contents and re-importing them. Or at least moving them all to a local folder then moving them back.

If none of that helps you may need to have a look at the scalix connector log files that get generated in the temp directories...

Ok, no joy on the Symantec settings. I turn off the "Outlook Auto Protect" setting, and then relaunch Outlook only to find that the extension is still enabled. If I disable it, it stays disabled for that session, but Outlook still freezes.

I tried creating new contacts (hitting "save+new" button) and it locks up on the second or third entry. Same with turning around and editing these contacts.

I started a new scalixmail.csv and scalixmail_crashtail.csv by renaming the old ones. I then opened Outlook and went right to trying to crash it; didn't take long.

I will post the scalixmail_crashtail in another post, as it is pretty long even after chopping off the beginning that has nothing to do with the contact I was saving. There is other stuff in the middle from where it was popping up my reminders, etc. - but I am not sure what is relevant here.

The tail end of the scalixmail.csv log looks interesting. It shows outlook exiting and a possible permissions issue.

You said this happens on multiple computers so its unlikely to be a screwy outlook profile. Sorry, but I'm out of ideas. I recommend you take this up with Scalix Support and open a support ticket. They will be able to interpret the log files and hopefully get to the bottom of it.

Well thanks for all of your help Les. I am going to try one more time to export, delete, and reimport just to be sure. I'll post back with results.

Nevermind, I'm not even going to put forth the effort for that. I just created a brand new contacts folder in the public folder and was only able to save one new contact successfully (to an otherwise empty folder). So something tells me the problem lies elsewhere.
