Outlook w Scalix Connect freeze problem

Postby caribk » Fri Feb 03, 2006 5:18 pm

We are using Scalix 9.4.0.52 with MS Outlook and Scalix Connect. I've received numerous user complaints (and seen the problem myself as well) of Outlook freezing and MAPI errors.

Whats seems particularly puzzling to me is that users describe the problem as 'Outlook works in the morning and then stops working in the afternoon' more frequently than any other pattern.

What this tells me is that potentially there is a mem leak or other resource exhaustive problem possible?

Any thoughts?

Hi caribk,

What else runs on your machines in terms of background processes? Do you have any desktop search applications? Are you trying to run with any other Outlook add-ins besides Scalix Connect?

Would you be able to post images of applications, processes, and performance shown by windows task manager on machines exibiting this behavior.

Thanks,

had this occur again for a user today.. seems like some kind of problem with the MAPI OUtlook connector. is there a logging feature that can be enabled to research this further?

below is a screenshot of the user's processlist at the time that the outlook connector caused(?) the freeze:

fyi, there is a NAT firewall between the users and the scalix server and the scalix server is running a host based firewall (although all ports are accessible between those two subnets). is it not over a WAN link, but due to the current (puh!) infrastructure the maximum bandwidth across that link is about 1Mbps.

Hi caribk,

OK, let's define "freeze." On the Applications tab of Task Manager does Outlook show as Not Responding? Does the client ever come back? Is there a trend the user's notice? Perhaps the user has just sent a large message? Perhaps they went to look at their Calendar and they have a large number of appointments?

Your "puh" comment indicates you are keenly aware that this is a very slow link. Scalix Connect does not perform well over slow links. This forum is filled with comments about SC over slow links.

Perhaps they can work in off-line mode as much as possible?

Q2 will give us a SC that is more performant over slow links.

Regards,
Don

"freeze" meaning that Outlook doesn't respond. by termininating it, the system still works but it requires a reboot to get outlook working again. no calendar items or large sent messages... actually, most of the time when outlook is opened or the user checks for new mail..

any more specific ETA on the improved client?
