Limit of Container reached ... pop up message on start

Postby GizmotroniX » Mon Jul 13, 2009 10:39 am

Hello Community,

on a Client after upgrade to 11.4.4 Connect, when Outlook starts up, a pop up message appears says something like "Can not show all items because the limit of this container has reached". Know anybody what limit and what container this message means ?

With omshowlog it only shows me the error "The Url Database is closed".

Where can i search for information it his message is generated from Scalix or from Outlook ? Didn't found something in Google so i think it comes from Scalix.

I allready reinstalled Scalix Connect 11.4.4, create a new profile and make a mailbox scan. Any ideas ?

Kind regards,
Roland

Hi,

I get the exact same error message when outlook starts up with only one mailbox.
A new outlook profile does not help and in webmail this message doesn't appear.
If the user opens a different mailbox on the same workstation, this error doesn't appear.
There was no upgrade or something else in the last few months.

Scalix mail server and Scalix connector version is 11.4.3.
The mailbox itself is only 200MB large and the INBOX contains about 550 emails.
The smart cache is disabled.
The workstation runs Windows XP 32bit SP3 and Outlook 2003 SP3.

Any help is welcome!

Regards,
tantony

sounds actually like a folder that has >128K items, which is currently the limit per folder. However, you already say that this is not the case.

have you omscan'd the mailbox (in Active mode, with -x option)?

Hello Florian,

yes i allready omscan`d the mailbox in active mode with extra fix option. What did you mean with >128K items ? Items they are greater den 128K filesize oder a folder contains more than 128.000 items ? The company use some public calendars with many entrys but the error occures only at one user all other works fine.

I mean more than 131072 (=128K) entries in one folder.

re-reading the post, however, a lower limit can hit, because the outlook connector limits the number of items that can be processed in any folder to 1/4 of this, i.e. 32K or 32767.

Any folder in your tree with that many items? Given it only affects one user, it would probably be in his personal folder tree. Any error message when the same user logs into SWA? does the problem manifest itself in the same way for a SmartCache as well as a non-SmartCache profile?

Thanks for your fast answer, Florian. I will check the amount of items per folders if anyone has more than 32767. The user first had a smartcache profile and no problems, only the smartcache himself struggles somestimes. So we created a new one without smartcache and after that the problem occures.

There is a debug option to 'sxmboxlist' that will display the number of msgs in folders:
sxmboxlist -u <user> --debug sizes

This produces a listing like this:

Thanks for your answers.

Think this should be solved by the user:

F-0001031718 Kalender 85Mb 42256 Msgs

I will talk to the user ;)

:-) good stuff.

please note that, because it's a calendar folder and probably the users primary one, I would actually recommend to keep it below 2000 elements for performance reasons and archive away the other elements to other folders.

Another question:

Did this affect also SWA or Active Sync ? I mean could this be a solution for sync problems with calendar and AS or open a large calendar in Webmail that causes SWA to crash ?

so folders up to 128K will be processed allright by SWA and AS - in principle.

As I said before, largish calendars can trigger a lot of processing, so that this could also cause issues on the actual client side. I'd suspsect that this could easily be at play here.
