Thanks Florian. I was trying my best to explain why it won't work with Scalix, but I just couldn't find the details again. I knew I had seen it before and that it wasn't Scalix's fault.

Assuming that is true Microsoft MAPI does not support this feature, I just did this:

Downloaded Bynari MAPI connector (which works with common IMAP servers but talks using MAPI with Outlook, I am sure you know this product). Added the POP3 account the same way as before:

Configured Bynari account to work with our company Exchange server using IMAP and entering nonsense as SMTP server:

POP3 account has SMTP server properly set:

First I try to send mail from Bynari account:

Of course fails saying: "Your message was not delivered to one or more recipients":

Then I try to send another mail from POP3 account:

The message is sucesfully delivered.

Please don't call me Mr. Curious but how is possible Bynari MAPI connector can handle this situation correctly if MAPI itself does not support this? Trial versions of Outlook 2007 and Bynari Connector are available so you can try it yourself if you think I made these snapshots in Photoshop.

Is there any news about this? I was told this "bug" is a limitation of MAPI and when I pointed out another MAPI solution which does not suffer this bug there is no other explanation from Scalix.

It is a limitation of mapi the way we use it, Microsoft have not documented the hooks they use from the Exchange MAPI connection and the way we provide our very full-functionality connector. I cannot really comment on what other connectors do; Bynari has less functionality in their connector compared to Scalix, therefore there is no direct comparable here.

It may have to do with the fact that Scalix uses their own address type ("OPENMAIL:"), which gives us some additional abilities for delegate access and things like free/busy lookups. If Bynari uses the SMTP: address type, that would mean that they may be following a hybrid approach that is more limited in certain areas, but can maybe coexist in this space. We'd really need to look into this to understand, but not sure what the gain would be.

The whole issue has been looked into a number of times and the outcome was that it's not something we can simply "fix" on our end. In that sense, we don't consider it a bug, but a known limitation of the integration.
