odd issue with reminders in outlook

Postby santo » Fri Feb 03, 2006 1:57 pm

Since yesterday I'm experiencing a really strange problem in outlook.
I started up outlook and after a minute or so, the reminder(s) popped up, but: they are in some loop !

The reminder sound repeats continuously (di-di-ding, di-di-ding, di-di-ding, ... ), I cannot change the snooze time, because the window is continuously being refreshed (hence the repeating sounds).
I can snooze the reminders, but only with the default snooze time (mostly "5 minutes", sometimes "5 minutes before start").
But this doesn't make the reminder window and sound go away.
I can see that the window title is continuously switching between "nr-of-reminders + 1 reminders" and "nr-of-reminders reminders"
Example: when I have 3 reminders, the title continuously switches between "4 reminders" and "3 reminders", so after having snoozed all the reminders to the default snooze time, the reminder window keeps popping with no reminders in it, but with the title of the window continuously changing between "0 reminders" and "1 reminders"

There is only one way to get it back to normal:
remove the scalix profile, uninstall scalix connect, remove every file on the filesystem related to the scalix connector, remove every reference to scalix connect in the registry, reboot windows and do a reinstall of Microsoft Office 2003. (through Add/Remove programs -> Change -> Reinstall or Repair -> Reinstall)

just removing the profile and recreating it, uninstalling the connector and reinstalling it, I tried it all and the above is the only thing that is "solving" the problem.

Unfortunately it's not for long. This evening (one day later that is), the problem re-appears.

Any hints ?

Note that I don't have any problems with reminders in another profile (domino access for microsoft outlook) on the same machine with the same outlook.

I also don't experience the problem with scalix connect on another machine, running the same versions of outlook, windows, scalix connect, etc.

And finally: it has worked for several weeks on this machine without any problems.

Hi santo,

Try starting outlook with the /cleanreminders switch. E.g...

Code: Select all

path_to_outlook\outlook /cleanreminders

Now I'm experiencing the same problem on another machine with windows XP too.

There is one thing both systems have in common: they have 2 outlook profiles, one for scalix (scalix connect) and one for lotus domino (DAMO - Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook).

Maybe DAMO is causing problems in combination with scalix connect ?

I managed to isolate the problem.

It had something to do with a "special" reminder I configured.
More specifically, I added a reminder to an email message using the "follow up -> Add reminder" option.

And this was causing the trouble for some reason.
As soon as I marked that reminder as completed, the problem disappeared.

The strange part is that my outlook installation on my desktop pc didn't experience any problems with it, while the outlook on my laptop did.

Both are the same operating system with the same windows updates, same version of outlook, same service pack for outlook (SP2) and same profiles defined (scalix connect and DAMO)

Conclusion: in some situations, scalix connect has a problem with reminders defined using "Follow up -> Add reminder".

Good to hear you were able to resolve this. I will try adding follow up/add reminder to see how it behaves for me.

Thanks,
don
