Outlook 2003 takes ages to start

Postby wheelc » Thu Nov 17, 2005 6:14 am

Hello All,

Platform:
Outlook 2003
Sclaix Connect 9.2.0.210

I am having an issue with Outlook 2003 and Scalix Connect. Essentially Outlook can take 5 minutes to start in offline mode. I think this is related to a large offline database size (256MB). Is there a way of defragging the offline database?

Or any other ideas?

cheers

Chris

Hi,

I have a test mailbox that has an offline store of 411MB, and it opens fairly quickly. In the Scalix synchronization options, select sync on exit to see if that helps. Also, do have any 3rd party OL plugins installed? What are your system specs?

When you are opening OL in offline mode, is there a network connection available? If so, you are actually not (believe it or not) in offline mode. OL with Scalix Connect will actually use the network connection if it's available, regardless of a user selecting "offline mode".

So, if this is the case, are you connecting to the Scalix server within the LAN, or over the WAN (VPN)?

Let me know,

Are you talking about OL Offline mode or Scalix Connect Offline mode? I will assume Scalix Offline mode as the former completely screws up the operation of outlook and Scalix.

The slow response, sometimes 4 minutes to open OL properly happens over LAN or WAN. Not to sure about what you are saying really as offline mode is surely meant for using when you are working over a slow network line that precludes the use of online mode.

Was this a feature introduced with 9.2.0.210? I did not have this problem with the previous version.

Thanks.

Chris.

There is no difference between Scalix offline mode and OL offline mode. Once you configure Scalix offline working in the Tools menu, you can either work online or offline. Did you use Tools > Sync with Scalix > Enable offline working?

As mentioned, when Scalix Connect detects a network connection even if you select offline mode, it will use it. You need to truly be "offline" to use SC/OL in offline mode.

You might want to try disabling offline working, logging out/in to OL, and enabling OFS again. There might be a corruption somewhere. Also, you might want to consider upgrading to 9.4.2.6 (9.2 is quite old).

If you can tell me the exact steps you tool to set up offline working (and what you mean when you say the "latter screws up the operation of ....") that would help.

Lastly, in the Scalix synchronization options, is sync on exit selected?

I have upgraded as requested. However I had the same issue. The good news is that I have resolved it. Basically I had the following running on my XP SP2 laptop:

1) Skype
2) Offline Folder Sync
3) Scalix Connect

The first two start first with Scalix connect coming in when I kick it off. When taking along time or actually failing in online mode an event was raised in the XP event log showing that the maximum number of TCPIP connections had been reached.

This is a NEAT  feature of XP SP2 to stop malicious programs opening up multiple connections and exploiting your network connection.

So if I stop skype or wait for the initial offline folder sync to complete all is OK. The way to diagnose it is via netstat -no.

Thanks for your help.

Chris.

Hmmm... very interesting. I'll try to reproduce that and see what's going on between Scalix and Skype.

Thanks for the information,
