'Seamless integration with MS Outlook'....not so much.

Postby bluemike » Fri Nov 11, 2005 9:19 pm

I have installed Scalix Community, and the Outlook connect utility and had no problems. In fact it works pretty well. I was kind of set back though when I attempted to duplicate my old rules set.

Currently, we take each incoming email (thru the ISP) and scan it for attachments. If it has an attachment, an Outlook plug-in (called EZ Detach) will save the attachment into a specificly named folder.

We have used this method for several years and since it wasn't a server issue, I did not anticipate any problem with the new Scalix server. However, when I started to re-create my rule in the new Outlook profile, I was presented with the 'Scalix Rules Wizard".

That's all fine except it does not have all the same rules. For example, how can I make email sent to different accounts play different sounds? How can I tell Outlook to execute EZ Detach to save the attachments in a uniform way?

There may very well be a workaround out there. I sure hope so....

Well, it appears I have found a workaround.

I have created aliases for all the required email address, so they all route through a single primary address. Then I created a single POP account in Outlook for that primamry address. For some reason, when I run the rules wizard through a POP account everything is normal. So I was able to create rule that route email, execute DLL's, and play specific sounds; all on the client side. I don't know why it works this way and the documented way, but it seems to work well.

I'm glad you got it working the way you want. However, just as an FYI, Scalix Connect does not support any 3rd party apps in OL. We are working towards supporting some of the more commonly used plug-ins (CRM, etc...) for future Scalix releases.

I figured Scalix doesn't support 3rd party apps, but since this was a completely client-side program, I didn't expect it even come into the equation. The app doesn't touch the server at all; in fact the DLL is called by Outlook.

It would be like setting up an Apache webserver and finding out you can no longer change the favorites in Mozilla.

But I digress.... it works so I'm happy :D
