Strange error message

Postby cmcnabb » Mon Nov 07, 2005 1:16 pm

Hello everyone,
I migrated someone over recently from Exchange 5.5 to Scalix. She has to have access to some calendars of people who are still on Exchange, so she has to email accounts set up in the same profile, 1 scalix and 1 exchange. She sent out an email this morning, from the Scalix account, received a reply. When she attempted to reply back, she got an error message that said "The address type is not supported by the service provider." If she attempts to send from her Exchange account (Accounts drop down within OL 2003) it sends fine.

She is running Windows XP Professional. She is completely on Scalix, with the exception of the calendar sharing through Exchange. She is using the Scalix Connect 9.4.1.1 to connect to Scalix (9.2.1)

Why would this be happening, and more importantly, how do I fix it?

The problem is probably occurring because the address is an Exchange-style address and the Scalix MAPI provider is not able to use it.

Can you confirm that you have both the Exchange and Scalix providers in the same profile ? If so, we do not support this type of profile. The reason is that both the Exchange and Scalix provider are looking to be the default message store and the results are unpredictable.

This is documented in the release notes under "Additional Services in the Same Profile".

Cheers

Dave

I do have both in the same profile. I have that for the calendar functionality she needs. Is there another way that I can allow her access to the calendars on Exchange without having her Exchange identity in her profile?

Thanks,
-Chad

Chad,

unfortunately this is not possible. Both Scalix and Exchange integrate into Outlook as a "default store" and there can only ever be one that works correctly.

I would suggest that you provide access to the exchange mailbox using another email client on the same system, such as Outlook Express, Thunderbird or Outlook Web Access.

Assuming this will only be a short coexistence period until you fully migrate to scalix? ;-)

I hadn't thought about using a different client. I will look into that as an option. Right now, she does have both accounts sitting in her default Outlook profile (I know, and bugs aren't fault of Scalix, but my fault at keeping them together like that) and I am considering setting up a second profile on her system, one for the Exchange and one for Scalix. That should give her the functionality that we are looking for.

It will be a short coexistence period. The only reason I can't just go ahead and migrate people immediately is because a lot of our machines are quickly becoming nothing more than paperweights running Win98, which isn't supported with the Connect piece of Scalix. We are in the process, but it does make our migration seem a little slow.

Thanks for the help with this.

-Chad
