Does scalix support direct delivery to mailboxes?

Postby Peitolm » Wed Jun 13, 2007 10:21 am

On some systems it's possible to have an email address like the following,
username+something@domain
and the system to equate username+something@domain to be the same user as username@domain and then at the delivery stage deliver the email into a folder called "something"

eg

peitolm+scalix@home would deliver into the scalix folder for the user peitolm@home

I'm not sure what this feature is called, but my initial testing doesn't appear to work.

Ideally, if the mailbox didn't exist, it would be automatically created (a way of giving out one-time email addresses to marketeers and the like.
If someone could point me in the right direction, i'd appreciate it (I may even be asking the question in the wrong location)

Cheers,

Colin Morey

No, this is not possible currently.

I suggest you add it to http://bugzilla.scalix.com as an enhancement request, but I am not sure how hard it would be to implement internally, or if it is feasible to do.

How did this user+mailbox@domain business come about? This is not typical of email addressing by any standards, and I've never seen it in my 27 years of email.
Which email system have you used that has this feature?

It's called plus (or minus) addressing and it's quite common:

Man oh man!!!
Living and learning.... Things don't really stay static.
Back in 99 I had to do a lot of research work, in preparation for the Y2K transition, and email standards was one of topics of study, I see that plus (or minus) addressing, is part of the *proposed RFC 2821 standard* dated of April 2001, by AT&T, but I'm not sure if it really made it already into the official books. I will spend some time reading that material just for the heck of it, and to see if they are cooking up anything new. If i notice something interesting I post it here.

Thanks for the lead.

As Valerion mentioned, this isn't possible. However, I've found a way to solve the problem on a per-user basis: In ~scalix/mailnode/s/sys/smtpd.conf you can add a line

Code: Select all

CATCH username+*@domain username@domain

- this will at least deliver the mail to the correct user, even if you have to set it up for earch user that needs it, and have to set up filtering yourself.

I've also logged an enhancement request in Scalix bugzilla as bug 15582 - http://bugzilla.scalix.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15568
