SIS indexwork but no indexes

I am running Scalix Community Edition 11.3 on a CentOS 5 box. I have upgraded this system from Scalix 11.2 where everything was working flawlessly.
One of the problems I have observed concerns the Indexing process. I have followed the Wiki instructions on how to rebuild the indexes but it seems that something is not going as expected. During the upgrade there were some errors with postgres but after several install/uninstall cycles the installer completed without any errors.
I read on this forums and in the documentation that the SIS process might take some time to complete but it has been over a week now since the operation started and it is still not complete.
What happens is that there is a lot of activity in the .../s/indexwork directory but no files are created in the /indexes location. There are no errors shown in the logs and the indexwork directory keeps growing.
Can somebody point me in a direction where to start so that I can get to the bottm of this?
thank you
