I am very interested in the Scalix web access and groupware because of the way it communicates with Outlook. However, I currently have a web server with e-mail already running that does a backup every night to ensure that no users lose their mail to a hot-swappable backup already on the server. The server has anti-virus and anti-spam installed on the e-mail with both imap and pop functionality.

Now if I wanted to install a Scalix server in my environment to give my users Outlook syncing features what is the best way to implement that. Keep in mind that backing up, spam/anti-virus scanning, and SMTP relaying.

All you basically need to do is to setup a regular scalix server with at least the /var/opt/scalix directory setup as LVM volume. Then you can start testing scalix and you could keep your current mailserver in sync with scalix using imapsync as long as you want to have them both running.

For backups you could do LVM snapshots regularly as described in the documentation. For Antispam and AntiVirus there is also support for ClamAV and SpamAssassin (see articles in the wiki or docs). Scalix also provides IMAP and POP3 out of the box (besides much more standardized interfaces to access your data). So as soon as you like your scalix installation the way it is you can switch off your current mailservice and change your MX-record to point to your brandnew scalix-server.

All you need to do is download the community edition. set it up the way you want it to work and then you can either continue to use it for free for up to 10 Users (starting from 11.3) or buy the licenses you need copy the license file to your server and you're done ...
