I would like to configure our Local Scalix Mail Server to be accessed by local users using a local IP and remote users to access the same server using a public IP. Is this possible using one network card and mapping a public IP to the local IP, or would I need two network cards for this setup.

I’m sure some Scalix users would have used this setup, I searched the forum but could not find sufficient information on this. What would be the standard configuration for this type of setup.

Please help.

On my firewall I use a port forward (PAT setup) to achieve this. It will depend on where your firewall is. If the Scalix server is inside your network, with a firewall between it and the outside, you let the firewall do all the heavy lifting, and you need a single card with either 1 or 2 IPs bound to it (depending on your firewall setup). If you don't have a firewall, you will have to make the Scalix server your firewall, and will probably need 2 cards.

Thank you for your reply. Our Scalix server is on our LAN behind a firewall. So are you saying I don’t need to have two network cards and I can just configure my firewall to handle this setup? Wouldn’t port forwarding affect POP/SMTP requests made for servers other than the Scalix server.

Some of our clients are configured to connect directly to mail servers outside of our network, I’m worried that port forwarding will conflict with their email service.

This will depend heavily on the capabilities of your firewall. You will have to check the docs.

In general it shouldn't be a problem, though, usually the NAT-capable firewalls differentiate between incoming and outgoing traffic, and handle things accordingly. I suggest you speak to your firewall vendor, though, on how to get the rules set up. Or maybe a local Scalix reseller can help you if it's within their expertise.
