Can't Send External Mail

Postby robspierre » Tue Nov 20, 2007 10:35 pm

We cannot seem to send mail to external addresses after upgrading from 11.0 to 11.2 on SLES9.

It appears that sendmail is running.

mobsx01:/ # lsof -i :25
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
sendmail 6236 root 4u IPv4 12593 TCP localhost:smtp (LISTEN)

And if we use do the following, the mail gets there just fine.

mobsx01:/ # echo "Subject: Testing" | /usr/lib/sendmail -v myemail@hotmail.com
myemail@hotmail.com... Connecting to [127.0.0.1] via relay...

But if we try to send from Scalix, no such luck. There is nothing in mailq either. Outbound mails sent from Scalix just seem to go nowhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Solved

Postby robspierre » Wed Nov 21, 2007 10:57 pm

We were able to resolve this issue, so I thought I would share the resolution with the rest of the forum. After hacking around SAC, we found that we had 77 mails (all with dates of August 2007) in the Internet Mail Gateway queue. Though I indicated in the previous post that we were unable to send outbound mail entirey, that turned out not to be true. We were able to send outbound mail to external e-mail addresses, but it was taking upwards of 2.5 hours for the mail to leave the Scalix server. At any rate, we deleted the 77 "hung" messages from the Internet Mail Gateway queue and voila.....all of the sudden e-mails started flowing outbound brilliantly once again.

Messages built up in the Internet Mail Gateway queue bogging down the normal message flow. Deleted all of the messages in the Internet Mail Gateway queue. Problem solved.
