LDAP connection with Evolution

Hi everyone,
I've got our Xerox super-duper-photocopier looking to scalix for email addresses of users so it can send scans directly to people via email.
the settings I put into it were very straight forward
server: <entered the static ip address of scalix server> port 389
anonymous login
nothing for search path etc etc. (not even the o=Scalix needed to go anywhere)
Everything seems to be fine for the xerox.
Now when I try to connect to the server with Evolution I don't know what I'm missing. I've got Evolution 2.8 (running on centos5)...try to add a new address book. Choose "ldap" Enter server name, port 389, no encryption, anonymous, search base o=Scalix, Search scope=One, search filter=(ObjectClass=*)...I've tried about every combination of the options and nothing works upon restarting evolution.
Is there somethig I'm missing? Setting up the xerox was quite simple...and evolution has never worked...
