Mailbox mirroring,archival, retention

Postby WTPsyche » Mon Oct 08, 2007 2:55 pm

I realize that this is several questions in one. However, the basis for all of these is simple... we have the need to enforce document retention policies for email. What I'm looking for is a straightforward way of mirroring what a mailbox contains (or has contained).

1) I can set forwarding rules with sxaa, but that only takes care of new email that a particular recipient has received. It doesn't account for sent emails, or those things created within the mailbox.

2) I can back up a user's mailbox using ombackup (omcpoutu, sxboxexp), but I've found that this does not contain the Recovered Items folder. So, any emails deleted between mailbox backups won't be included and can't be recovered.

So, my questions are:

1) Is there a simple way of dynamically mirroring a particular mailbox? If it gets written to one mailbox (Inbox, Sent, Notes, etc.), it gets written to another?

2) Is there a partner or third-party software that someone can recommend that we look at to do the job? I'd like something that can stand up to the usage and scrutiny of potentially being used for official record.

3) Where are the Recovered Items per user kept, and is there a way to get the omcpoutu utility to grab that as part of its export of a user's mailbox?

4) I'm open to any other suggestions that you think may fit the needs we have.

Thanks,
Steve

I think you're looking for the Archiver functionality. Have a look at the Scalix Administration Guide page 153. The Archiver will handle every mail sent through Scalix (incoming, outgoing and between users) and write it to disk or send it off somewhere else.

Excellent. It's strange when you get certain terms in mind that you're looking for, and the obvious ones (like "archive") escape you, turning up nothing in searches.

Thanks for the pointer to that setting. I was also able to find other threads of other people who have been looking for the same thing.

I still wouldn't mind an answer about where the Recovered Items for each user are stored, and whether those can be backed up and restored.

I appreciate the input.

Hello,

We also ran into a problem of missing an item that is most likely in the Recovery Folder, but not in the user mailbox export done with sxmboxexp. Would highly appreciate the info where the recovery data actually is stored and how it could be included into the export?

Thanks,
Kimmo

I do not believe a sxmboxexp can get this data, as it's no longer part of the mailbox, but stored in a "communal pool" of emails. If you have a full backup of /var/opt/scalix you can restore that to a different machine and get the information back from there. I prefer to do a full backup anyway, rather than a per-user sxmboxexp, as all my settings and custom configs are still preserved. It's useful if you accidentally delete a user, though.

If the Archiver was running you could resubmit the message directly back into the server as well.
