Question re: SMTPD.CONF (SUBMIT)

Postby audiotron2002 » Fri Sep 14, 2007 1:24 pm

We are receiving so many spam messages for users that do not exist on our systems. It is crashing our scalix mail servers and cuases huge queus in the outgoing mail (i think these are "no user exist" messages that are being returned. Each time we find it, we have to clear the queue and add it to the smtpd.conf file.

So we have decided to introduce a new incoming mailserver and use spamtitan.

Here is my question:

We have many mobile users and we want to continue to use the relay function in the smtpf.conf file. If I add the line REJECT SUBMIT ALL and have an exception for the one local spamtitan mailserver to the smtpd.conf file, will that prevent anyone from trying to deliver a message via scalix and still allow mobile users to relay?

What I am trying to do is not allow scalix to accept any messages for delivery, ecept form one front end mail server but still alow mobile users to relay. Is this possible?>

Is there a reason why you can't add your domain name to /etc/mail/local-host-names and restart sendmail ?

what would that do? my issue is that the incoming scalix smtp server accepts messages even where there is not username. There is no receipt verification (like exchange).

And when it does that it causes a bounce which clogs up my mailserver. At least once a week we have 40k++ messages tcuk in the queue.

so I am trying to remove scalix from the incoming equation and use a different mailserver for incoming mail. But I still want to allow the mobile users to use the scalix smtp server for sending mail. Otherwise Ill need to have accounts in two places (to authenticate smtp)_.

Any thoughts?

I guess the real issue is that the SMTP server for scalix is very rudimentary and cannot be easliy tinkered with.

This is something that's been discussed here a number of times.

Adding the domain name to /etc/mail/local-host-names causes the SMTP relay to reject unknown users and then the responsibility for the bounce is on the sending MTA and not the scalix server.

I understand what you are saying now.

To follow up...

the smtpd service on Scalix reads the local-host-file? I thought that was a sendmail program.

Mail for users not found in the Scalix directory is handed off to sendmail, which will attempt to deliver the message as best it can.

Adding your domains to the file in question will ensure that sendmail rejects the message if the a UNIX user with the name doesn't exist on your system, rather than doing an MX lookup for the domain & routing the message back to the Scalix box.
