Indexer service grabbing many sockets

Postby turb0chrg » Thu Sep 13, 2007 2:41 pm

Hey there.

I've been playing with Scalix for awhile now and so far so good. Until today! Scalix 11.0.4 indexer service is taking up 1000 sockets almost immediately upon starting.

I'm running this server on a VPS and it's hitting the ceiling provided for sockets (see http://wiki.openvz.org/Numothersock#numothersock) within 10 seconds. This causes other nasty problems like me not being able to SSH to it! Is Scalix simply grabbing sockets until it is rejected? If so can I reduce this since I think the VPS probably handles the limit different than a dedicated server.

Let me know if you need any log snippets!

Thanks, Joel.

I should add that I had recently imported about 1.9GB of mail into one user's mailbox through Outlook by importing their old PST. My guess is that the indexer is busy working away on that and I've read that this can take several days sometimes.

I should have mentioned in the previous message that it kills my Outlook users from connecting as well since the sockets are exhausted. When I do an "lsof | grep socket | grep indexer" during this X, I get 588 lines of similar to:

indexer 20058 scalix 4u unix 0xbc4eb940 313417657 socket

Is this standard behavior, the indexer sucking up so many sockets?

Thanks!

Looking at the release notes for 11.1 I see this:

Bug 15242: Search: Reduce Indexing I/O (http://bugzilla.scalix.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15242)

Perhaps I should be upgrading my 11.0.4 to 11.1?

Joel.

Well to continue talking to myself here.....

I managed to stop the indexer from taking the server down by clearing out the /var/opt/scalix/??/s/indexwork/ directory.

The indexer is running now but I am holding my breath for it to kick in when server load gets low and have the same behavior. I don't this it has activated yet since the indexwork dir is empty other than a few single byte files.

Hi,
A lot of improvements were made in the indexing area for 11.1, so you may well benefit a lot from an upgrade. :-)
Regards,
Gren
