To update or not to update (RHEL)

Postby eyalm » Fri Mar 30, 2007 6:06 pm

Hi,
I'm runing Scalix 11 on RHEL 4 release 3.
I installed it on a fresh red hat install, no updates.
Should I run up2date and update the packages or will that break my scalix installation?

Thanks.

You’re likely going to get a lot of opinions about this. I always start my builds with a totally patched OS prior to installing any software or services. I never let my systems auto update. Red hat does have a roll back feature. I usually backup /etc and the /opt/ …./scalix before a patch is installed. I have been using up2date on my install and have not to this point had any issues. My opinion is patch it. Just make sure you have the proper documentation to troubleshoot quickly should you need to.

Thanks TRACKS for your answer.

I wasn't sure if upgrading httpd, glibc, etc will break anything. but I will give it a try.

Thanks again.
