This is because in Exchange 5.5, they do what is called Single Instance Message Storing.
What this means is if you were to send an email to 5 people, one copy is kept in the message store and pointers to this message is sent to everyone, thereby reducing the size of your message store.
When you do the import, Scalix has to change these pointers to the actual email to put it in the store, thereby growing your message store.
Of course, any new messages you receive will be done with the Single Instance Message Storing to keep your message store as small as possible.
