Uptimes, patches, Downtimes, Etc.

I have been testing the community edition, very nice.

I need to setup an email server for a small municipality. Only about 5 want the advanced Outlook features, the rest want IMAP email and Web based email.

So my question becomes this: if you are currently running Scalix Server, how often does it misbehave for you (consume too much resources, crash, etc)? How often do you have to patch it? Basically, how often has it been down for you?

I would be very interested to know. Like I said, we intend to primarily use the POP and IMAP and Webmail features. The Outlook Connector will be used in a limited fashion (and I do have one BlackBerry user, he's the cheif of police, so I might set him up with the mobile features!!)

Thanks anyone!

Prior to 11, never.

Scalix has a history of being absolutely rock solid. Scalix 11 included some significant changes, and there were some problems as a result. 11.0.1 has largely resolved them, and 11.0.2 due in about 2 weeks will improve on that again.

Scalix can generally be set up and left on it's own. You see problems with building power, internet connectivity and hardware far more often that with the server itself.

Scalix is moving to a monthly (approx) release cycle as I understand it, but I think most people skip many of the point releases unless they need them. Upgrades take about 15 mins, often less, depending on hardware. For most places, I'd plan on 3-4 upgrades per year. Other times people always want to be current, which would mean 12 annually. I usually upgrade the OS at the same time, and 15 mins would be enough time to do both.

Goofy misbehavior just doesn't happen.

Overall, it's a great product, and you won't be disappointed. I will say, save yourself some grief. Run it on an enterprise platform. RHEL or SLES. The reliability won't change, but upgrading is greatly simplified, and for $500, it's well worth the cost when weighed against needing to upgrade the OS at the same time as Scalix.
