Backup Script Questions...

Hi Everyone,

Been using the Backup Script from the Wiki for some time now I only just noticed that it backs up the /var/opt/scalix/data/ and then exports users' mailboxes into seperate files. My question is whether it iis necessary to do both or is one sufficient? Our data directory is 4GB and with the additional mailbox export is a total of 6GB. Quite a strain on our backup when running everyday.

If someone could point out the pros and cons, it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dennis.

If you need to restore just one user, and you only have a backup of the entire message store, you have to restore that to a test server just to extract that one users data. This way, you can just untar that one user's backup and restore just that one user.

On the other side, if something totally gets hosed, and you have to restore the entire server, you will definitely want a backup of the entire message store, not just a backup of the individual users that you would then have to restore manually to each user....

That is pretty much how I look at it...

Anytime!

One suggestion so you can learn from my mistake... when a user gets messed up, and you have to delete and restore the user... don't forget to rejoin the user to their groups. I made that mistake. Just so happened that the 2nd in charge of the company didn't get group emails for almost 2 weeks.... OOPS!!!!

(Don't make that mistake... it wasn't fun...)
